NEW YORK - Four players scored in double figures for the College of Staten Island women's basketball team, but fell 78-81 on the road to Springfield College in its season opener at the NYU Tip-Off Tournament, Friday.
CSI's Nikki Fabozzi led Staten Island with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Lisa Galasso added 17 points for the Dolphins who were outrebounded by the Pride 42-52. Staten Island knocked down eight threes, with Megan Myhre hitting three from beyond the arc and Melanie Johnson recorded 13 points while Katelyn Hepworth tallied three steals.
The Dolphins used a strong first half to gain the edge, with a 24-12 run and quickly building a nine-point advantage behind Fabozzi and Galasso who each finished with 11 first-half points. CSI scored 14 points off of 11 Springfield turnovers in the first 20 minutes, to see their lead grow to 47-34 at the half.
However, during the second half of play the Pride turned up their defense and limited Fabozzi to eight points and Galasso to six. Despite being down 13 at the half, Springfield made a push during the final five minutes of play, going on a 12-2 run and giving them the win.
Staten Island finished the game shooting 36.9 percent and tallied 22 second chance points while making seven steals. Leading all scorers was Springfield's Heather Lewis with 22 points and 10 boards, while teammate Jaimie Bickelhaupt registered a double-double of her own with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
The Dolphins will play their final game at the NYU Tip-Off Tournament tomorrow, Saturday, where they will face either NYU or St. Joe's – Brooklyn at 6pm or 8pm.
