STATEN ISLAND, NY - It marked the second time this season in which the College of Staten Island men's & women's diving teams faced off against one another, and yet again the Dolphins proved to be the better team as both the CSI men and women were victorious over the Bulldogs, Tuesday.
The battle between the women's teams was a tense and close one throughout the meet, but thanks to the talents of divers
April Bartlett and
Stephanie Collyer, the Dolphins were able to pick up a few extra points late in the competition to give them a slight edge over their conference foes.
Heading into the final event for the women, despite its lead CSI needed to the first-place points in the 200 freestyle relay in order to pull out the win. The two teams were neck-and-neck throughout the race, but the Dolphins managed to pull away from the Bulldogs in the final lap, hitting the wall just a second before BC, with a season-best time 1:55.59 (
Jessica Pifalo,
Naomi Gaggi, Priscilla Alvarez, and Adrianne Vivas).
For the men, the Dolphins were in complete control the entire meet as they took the top-spot in 10 of the meet's 11 swimming events. Leading the way for CSI on the men's side was Tim Sweeney as he not only took the 100 freestyle in convincing fashion, but managed to clock in with a season-best time of 51.47. Earlier in the evening, the freshman played a major role in the 200 medley relay team that not only placed 24-seconds ahead of its competitors, but registered another season-best time of 1:43.96 (Sweeney,
Danila Novikov,
Yury Zimarev and
Derek Villa).
In the end, the Dolphins crushed the Bulldogs on the men's side with a final score of 148-71, while the women were able to outscore the BC, 124-105.
With little rest, the Dolphins return to action tomorrow evening as they travel to William & Patterson for a nonconference match-up. The meet is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
