The 3rd Annual CUNYAC/MCU Intramurals Championship Series began with handball at the College of Staten Island. In conjunction with Wall Ball World, the single elimination tournament featured 28 men's teams and eight on the women's side. Teams spanned across 11 CUNY institutions with the College of Staten Island having the most participants at 27.
Women's action saw a John Jay-LaGuardia versus Hunter-City Tech final with both teams winning two matches along the way. LaGuardia's Effie Leander and Jojo Parra proved too much for Tiffany Chiu and Myohwa Hwee from Hunter as the duo took home the hardware 21-4.
"It is a honor to win a event like this against some of the best competition within the CUNY community," said Parra.
"It's awesome since we are not apart of a school team," continued Leander. "I am still able to come out and compete in something I enjoy."
On the men's side, two Queens-based tandems competed for the title after winning four games to reach the final. Tony Ferruggia from Queens College and Johnny Velez from Queensborough Community College teamed up against LaGuardia's Johnathan Pazmino and Queen's College Josef Gotsch. In the end, Ferruggia and Velez were victorious 21-9.
"It was a great tournament," said Velez. "I had tons of fun. It's awesome to see how CUNY intramurals has grown."
"This intramural was a great experience," said Ferruggia. "It's great that students from all over the 5 boroughs can get together and compete against one another."
A participant from BMCC named Victor chimed in to say "I really enjoy how I'm able to come out and play and have fun all while playing for a reason. I'd like to thank CUNY for this opportunity."
A special thank you goes out to Wall Ball World for all their hard work in running the event with ease. We also like to thank Red Bull and Ektelon for sponsoring the event as well as the players in the exhibition match: Timothy Gonzalez, Tywan Cook, Del Garnett, & Carlin Rosa.
