Throggs Neck, NY | The College of Staten Island baseball squad suffered a doubleheader setback this afternoon, falling to Maritime College on the road in a pair.  Maritime won the opener 15-3, before taking a 6-2 winner in the second game to complete the season set.  The Privateers improved to 14-7 overall while CSI dipped to 6-8.

GAME 1 - Maritime 15, Staten Island 3
The Privateers left little to doubt in the opener, using a pair of CSI errors in the first inning to score seven unearned runs in a nine-run inning that kept CSI at bay the rest of the way.  Chris Deddo started it with an RBI-double against CSI starter Thomas Musso, Travis Zurita followed later with another hit to chase in a run to make it 2-0, and after Maritime scored again, Shane Sullivan roped in a two-RBI double.  A pair of bases-loaded walks allowed more runs to score, chasing Musso before Phil Russo scored another pair via hit to end the frame's scoring.  At the final tally, the Privateers had scored nine runs on just four hits.

Deddo towered a home run in the game's third inning to improve on MC's lead, and an inning later Aaron Schiavone and Sullivan posted RBI singles off of reliever Joseph Titta to burst the Privateer lead to 12-0.  Maritime would score three more in the fifth inning before CSI posted a response.  

In the sixth, Nicholas Meola roped a two-RBI double for CSI, chasing in Lozada who was hit by a pitch to start the frame, and Jordan Wilson, who earned on via an infield hit off of MC starter Dylan Clausen.  One inning later, Khalid Zahrieh was plunked and came around to score on a Lozada single.  MC reliever Sean McQuail shut the door from there however and Maritime retained the 15-3 win.

Clausen improved to 3-0 with the win, posting six innings, allowing two earned on just three hits, fanning 10.  Zurita finished 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of RBI and three runs scored.  Lozada finished 2-for-2 for CSI with an RBI and run scored.

GAME 2 - Maritime 6, Staten Island 2
In a game that was similar to the first, only with less scoring, Maritime assumed an early lead, and CSI registered late, but not enough to upset a deep hole.  CSI starter Chris Karnbach was touched for a run in the game's first inning, as Russo doubled in Deddo, who posted a one-out walk to start the threat.  After Maritime pitcher A.J. Ammirati got through the first three innings surrendering just two CSI hits, Maritime then improved on the lead with a three-run third inning.

With two outs, Maritime was able to load the bags and Antonio Diaz stroked in a single to score two runs to make it 3-0.  An at-bat later, Zurita was successful at stealing home when Diaz raced from first to second, drawing a throw.  Karnbach escaped the inning with no further damage, but Maritime had a 4-0 lead.

In the game's fourth frame, the Privateers added two more on a pair of hits, and Karnbach left the game with his team down 6-0.

After a scoreless fifth, CSI was able to punch in two runs in the sixth, as Glenn Glennerster drew a bases-loaded walk that punched in Meola who doubled earlier in the frame, and then Lozada added an RBI-single off of reliever Skylar Graff.  CSI could get no further, however, garnering a single base-runner in the seventh before bowing out.

Ammirati scored the win with 5.2 innings of work, yielding two earned runs on five hits, fanning six.  Graff earned his third save, while Karnbach took the loss.  Matt Costleigh and Russo each posted two hits for MC, adding a RBI and run scored each.  Lozada went 3-3 with an RBI in the second game.

CSI will be back in action, weather permitting on Monday afternoon at 4:00 pm, when they host John Jay College in a doubleheader.  The game was originally scheduled for Sunday, but will be moved to Monday to allow for field conditions to improve after tomorrow's rains.
