While most young adults spend their summer lounging at the beach or sitting poolside, CSI sophomore Ashley Mullarkey of the CSI Softball team spent her summer getting in shape while raising money for cancer patients at the same time. In June, Mullarkey joined Team In Training (TNT), a local training program that helps people get in shape, trains them for marathons, half marathons, triathlons, hiking events or 100-mile bike races while raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The LLS’s mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma while also improving the quality of life for the patients and their families.

Why the movement and why the passion for Mullarkey? In the sixth grade Ashley had Patricia Jezycki, the Borough Expansion Coordinator for Team In Taining, as a teacher. When Mrs. Jezcki’s husband was diagnosed with leukemia, Ashley and her family donated funds to help find cure. When Ashley’s grandfather was diagnosed with lymphoma she decided there had to be more that she could do to help. It was here that Mullarkey looked into TNT. There was just one problem: she could barely run a mile when she first started.

“Two months into training and now I’m running 13 miles,” she claims after adopting TNT into her lifestyle. “Training for a marathon isn’t something you can cram for. It takes a lot of hard work. The coaches are very helpful and they give you steps and advice on how to get yourself in better shape.”

DOLPHINS CLOSE SEASON WITH LOSS TO SCARLET RAPTORS IN ECAC TOURNAMENT

The College of Staten Island’s Softball ended their season after a 6-1 loss to the Rutgers-Camden Scarlet Raptors in the quarterfinal round of the ECAC NY/NJ Metro Post Season Tournament. The Dolphins finished the season with a 24-17 overall record while the Scarlet Raptors extended to a 22-14 record and will advance to the next round where they will face No. 1 seeded Ramapo College.

Despite both teams tallying a hit each over three innings, the scoreboard remained blank for both teams. To start the fourth inning for the Dolphins Kristy Dillion singled to the mound. With Kaitlyn Flynn up to bat, Dillon stole both second and third base. Flynn grounded out to third base, however, scoring Dillon. A fly-out by Joanna Tepedino and ground out by Danielle Ponsiglione ended the inning.

The Scarlet Raptors started damage at the top of the fifth inning with three runs off two SAC bunts, one SAC fly, one hit and a CSI error. A three up-three down inning for CSI at the bottom of the fifth brought Rutgers-Camden up to bat again. Amanda D’Anduono got on base with a single to right field and moved to third by a SAC bunt by Brooke Keenan. When Stef Skorski fouled out down the left field line, D’Anduono scored to put the score at 4-1.

What’s more is that CSI will host opening quarterfinal games on Wednesday, May 12. The CSI men (31-10) received the field’s No. 3 seed. The Dolphins women (24-16), meanwhile, have earned the No. 4 seed in the eight-team field that kicks off on the same day.
Still in the hunt for a NCAA Division III National Tournament berth, the CSI men’s baseball unit can make a quality statement in that push for an at-large bid with a strong showing in the ECAC tournament, which is a straight-up, single-elimination tourney.
The Dolphins will be pitted against No. 6 Richard Stockton College (19-19). Start time will be 6:00pm at the CSI Baseball Complex. Should CSI advance, they would play the winner of No. 2 Rutgers-Newark (22-20) vs. No. 7 Rutgers-Camden (20-18) on Saturday, May 15. The other quarterfinal games pit No.1 FDU-Florham (31-10) against No. 8 Ramapo College (19-17), and No. 4 Stevens Tech (20-18) against No. 5 SUNY-Old Westbury (22-21). The Championship game will be played on Sunday, May 16, at the highest remaining seed with a time yet to be determined.

CSI SOFTBALL GARNERS POSTSEASON ANNALS

The College of Staten Island women’s softball squad closed out the 2010 season as the CUNYAC Championship Runner-Up and with it, the announcement of a series of all-stars has put a nice mark on the team’s accomplishments. Among the field of honorees is sophomore Danielle Ponsiglione, who took home CUNYAC Pitcher of the Year honors, while junior infielder Raechel Strobel took home the CUNY Sportsmanship Award. Both were the first such honors for the duo. A total of five other all-star selections were made, more than any other CUNYAC side.
Ponsiglione has had a brilliant effort in 2010, proving there is no sophomore jinx for the pitcher who turned in a remarkable freshman campaign as well. With an increased workload, the hurler went 20-8 this season, easily shattering CSI’s single season record for wins, which previously stood at 16, a mark set by Erin Donohue in 1991. The sophomore also has set school single season records for complete games (26) and innings pitched (180.0), while placing second in strikeouts with 112. With the possibility of an ECAC Metro NY/NJ Postseason Tournament berth on the horizon, those numbers may improve.
Ponsiglione’s high honor was matched by Strobel’s appointment as a first-team all-star and the CUNYAC Sportsmanship Award for softball. Strobel missed almost a quarter of the season due to injury, but the junior still managed a .367 batting average, scattering 9 extra bases and 20 RBI. The sportsmanship honor comes via nominations from CUNYAC softball coaches, making her a recognized ambassador of sportsmanship for the Dolphins. She joins Cross-Country’s Lisa Lamanna as the only such award recipients from CSI.

DOLPHINS SOFTBALL FALLS SHORT IN CUNYAC CHAMPIONSHIP BID VS. BARUCH

The College of Staten Island women’s softball team was on the doorstep of a back-to-back CUNYAC Tournament Championship, but the Dolphins ultimately fell to top-seeded Baruch College in Championship play by scores of 8-6, and 8-3, earlier today at the CSI Softball Complex as part of the double-elimination 2010 CUNYAC Women’s Softball Championships. The wins sent Baruch to the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament, while the Dolphins, who will now await a possible ECAC Metro NY/NJ Tournament berth, finalized their season with a record of 24-16.
The Dolphins opened up play today amidst the backdrop of rain, taking a 4-1 win over Baruch College in 10 innings as part of the winner’s bracket final in a game that was suspended yesterday due to darkness. Play resumed from the 9th inning, and with the international tiebreaker rule in effect as of the 10th frame, the Dolphins made an impression in that inning.
CSI administered the damage with all four runs being unearned, as back-to-back errors by the Bearcats allowed all of the runs after CSI got runners on second and third with no out when Jennifer Volpe walked and stole second while Jenna Schulman, who was already placed on second base, stole third. Winning pitcher Danielle Ponsiglione added the fourth insurance run via CSI’s second suicide squeeze of the tournament, scoring Kristy Dillon who gained third on one of the errors. Baruch added their lone run in the bottom of the frame, but it was CSI that came out on top, 4-1.

CSI STAYS ALIVE IN DAY ONE OF CUNYAC SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

The College of Staten Island women’s softball team may not have left day one of the 2010 CUNYAC Championship Tournament undefeated in double-elimination, but they didn’t suffer a loss either. The Dolphins handed No. 3 Hunter College a 7-3 loss to open up their half of the tournament at 1pm, then simply ran out of time as darkness suspended their winner’s bracket final against top-seeded Baruch College, 0-0, after eight innings. That game will resume tomorrow morning at 10am in the top of the 9th inning, with CSI coming to bat.
First things first, and after Baruch defeated John Jay College, 3-1, to open play, the defending-champion Dolphins took the stage against Hunter College. The last time the two sides met, CSI needed to erase a four-run deficit to eventually win, 9-6. This time the Dolphins’ fate would have to be similar, as the home team found themselves down, 3-0, after just a half inning.
Against Dolphins starter Danielle Ponsiglione, back-to-back infield singles byMolly Meehan and Arielle Zieff got the Hawks started in the first, and the two were promptly plated via a Megan McKenna triple to deep right-center. McKenna then trotted home on a passed ball one batter later. Before ever getting a chance to swing, The Dolphins trailed, 3-0.
