CSI GETS IN DONE AGAINST CITY TECH

Gabriella Villarruel was one of five Dolphins to win in both Singles and Doubles

The College of Staten Island women's tennis team had to take the show indoors due to the rain, but the team got the best of visiting New York City College of Technology by an 8-1 count in CUNYAC play on Saturday evening. With the win, CSI runs their record to 6-10 overall and 4-4 in CUNYAC play. The team clinched a spot in the CUNYAC postseason playoffs and have one more contest to determine playoff positioning before entering postseason play.

Play began with doubles and it was here that CSI got off to a stellar, 3-0, start. The team of Gabriella Villarruel and Fabiana Iannuzzi took an 8-4 win at No. 1 Doubles, while at No. 2, Nancy Almazo and Justine Kuna scored an 8-3 winner. At No. 3 Qing Li and Tara Colao paired up for the first time this season, and won an 8-0 affair.

When play turned to singles, CSI took five of the six flights. Winning impressively was Villarruel who blanked Kimberly Battle, 6-0, 6-0, in the top spot. Iannuzzi, Li, and Kuna all also enjoyed straight set wins as well. At No. 3, Almazo enjoyed a 6-3, 4-6, 10-4 tiebreak win in a spirited contest.

CSI will next face CCNY at Randall's Island on Monday at 3pm. Playoff positioning will be key in this contest. A win by CSI and the team would be seeded as high as 5th in the conference. A win by CCNY and CSI will be seeded either 6th or 7th. The CUNYAC Playoffs begin on Tuesday, October 20.
