Department of Sports Medicine Statement
Welcome to the College of Staten Island Sports Medicine Department. We are here to ensure that quality care is given to the student-athletes and their well-being is first and foremost. At the collegiate level, the physical demand of student-athletes can often result in athletic injuries, both minor and serious. Here lies the core of the athletic trainers' expertise.
Athletic Trainers are certified and licensed allied healthcare professionals who work under the direction of a licensed physician to provide health care to athletes and active individuals. Certified Athletic Trainers (ATC's) are responsible for implementing injury prevention strategies; providing immediate care and first aid during practices and competitions; evaluation and diagnosis of sport-related injuries; injury rehabilitation and treatment; and organization and administration of the school's sports medicine program, which includes maintaining medical records, acting as a liaison between the student-athlete and the insurance provider, and communication with the Team Physician, among many other duties.

Additional info regarding pre-participation medical documents:
- If you do not have insurance, you need to apply for it ASAP- it is a requirement for all College of Staten Island student-athletes to be insured. Applying for free or low cost insurance is simple and can be done online at www.healthfirst.org and/or www.metroplus.org.
- Sickle cell testing is part of the physical exam. It only needs to be done once so anyone who handed in results in previous years does not need to hand anything in. Sickle cell testing is mandatory to participate in sport at the College of Staten Island. Sickle cell testing results must be received and approved before you are eligible to play.
