CSI RETURNS TO THE TRACK AND SHATTERS TWO MEN'S RECORDS AT SPARTAN INVITE

STATEN ISLAND, NY – The College of Staten Island men's and women's indoor track and field teams returned to action on Friday afternoon at the Spartan Invitational, marking their first meet of the new year at Ocean Breeze. The meet marked the seventh consecutive appearance for the Dolphins at the annual event.

The afternoon saw strong performances across the board, highlighted by two new school records and one tied record on the men's side, along with numerous personal bests from both squads to open the second half of the indoor season.

Dominik Hric reset his own school record in the weight throw with a mark of 12.22m, placing 15th among 35 competitors and fourth in his flight. Another school record came in the 4x200 relay, where Steven Elcock, Karran Riley, Jeremiah Downer, and KJ Ede combined for a time of 1:29.07. Later in the meet, Downer tied the school record in the long jump with a leap of 6.28 meters.

Sam Whelan turned in an impressive day, posting personal bests in both sprint events. He clocked a 7.02 in the 60m dash to win his heat, then followed with a 22.20 in the 200 meters, finishing third in his heat. Whelan placed inside the top 10 overall in both events, highlighted by a sixth-place finish in the 200 meters. Downer and Christopher O'Brien also recorded personal bests in the 200 meters, finishing in 22.74 and 23.45, respectively. In the 400 meters, O'Brien posted an indoor personal best of 52.36, while Nicholas Mcauliffe competed in his first event as a Dolphin, finishing second in his heat with a time of 58.52.

In the distance events, Walter Gavilanes recorded a personal best in the mile with a time of 5:04.98, while Peter Galletta posted his own personal best in the 3,000 meters, finishing in 9:43.98.

On the women's side, four athletes recorded personal best performances. Kayla Larsen posted two on the day, registering a 4.64m mark in the long jump and a time of 1:04.79 in the 400 meters. Adonijah Washington set a personal best in the 200 meters with a time of 25.95, while Anna Carafiol recorded a personal best in the mile, finishing in 6:37.65.

The Dolphins will return to competition on January 18 at the NYC Gotham Meet, hosted at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island.
