WATERMAN HOMERS AS DOLPHINS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER WITH COUGARS

NEW YORK, NY – The College of Staten Island baseball team hosted Caldwell University on Saturday afternoon at Robertson Field on the campus of Columbia University, splitting a 7-inning non-conference doubleheader. The Dolphins fell in the opener in extra innings, 8-7, before rebounding with a 6-2 victory in game two.

Game One – Caldwell 8, CSI 7 (8 Innings)
The Cougars struck first in the opening inning, but the Dolphins quickly responded when JJ Hunter delivered a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1.

Caldwell again took the lead in the second inning with two runs, but CSI matched the effort with two of their own to keep the game even at 3-3. The Cougars added two more runs in the third to take a 5-3 advantage, but the Dolphins answered once again in the bottom half of the inning. Jaden Waterman blasted a two-run home run to tie the game for the third time, and Jamel Vera followed with an RBI double to right field to give CSI its first lead of the contest, 6-5.

The teams remained locked in a tight battle, with the score eventually tied again after six innings to force extra frames. In the eighth, Caldwell pushed across the go-ahead run and held off the Dolphins in the bottom half to secure the 8-7 victory.

Waterman finished 1-2 with two runs scored, two RBI, and two walks. Michael Flashner went 2-3 with two RBI, while Vera collected three hits in five at-bats and drove in two runs. Aidan Kielty started on the mound for CSI, pitching 3.0 innings and striking out three. Jack Kehoe took the loss after throwing the final 2.0 innings and recording two strikeouts.

Game Two – CSI 6, Caldwell 2
The Dolphins bounced back in game two with a strong all-around performance to earn the split. CSI jumped out to an early lead when Jandel Brito doubled to bring home two runs in the opening inning.

Kehoe added an RBI in the second inning to extend the Dolphins' lead to 3-0. After two scoreless frames, CSI added to its advantage in the fifth when Patrick Hassel singled through the left side to score Jason Romance, and Nicholas Rodriguez followed with an RBI to plate Brito, pushing the lead to 5-0. Kehoe later added another RBI to give the Dolphins a 6-0 cushion as CSI moved within three outs of a shutout.

Caldwell threatened in the top of the seventh, placing a runner on base with a leadoff single. The Cougars eventually pushed across two runs, but the Dolphins ended the game with a double play to secure the 6-2 victory.

Romance and Kehoe each went 2-4 at the plate, with Kehoe driving in two runs. Brito also recorded two hits, finishing 2-3 with two RBI. Alex Martinez earned his first win of the season after pitching 6.1 innings and striking out six. Rob Gilroy recorded the final two outs to help close out the win.

The Dolphins (3-5) will open East Coast Conference play on Friday, March 13, when they travel to Sparkill, NY to play St. Thomas Aquinas College for a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 PM.
