POMONA, NY – The College of Staten Island baseball team wrapped up its regular-season series against St. Thomas Aquinas College on Tuesday afternoon at Clover Stadium.
The Dolphins outlasted the Spartans in a high-scoring contest, earning a 17–14 victory behind a dominant performance from Jaden Waterman, who launched two home runs. The senior outfielder was one of three CSI players to go deep in the East Coast Conference (ECC) win.
St. Thomas Aquinas struck first with a solo home run in the opening inning to take a 1–0 lead. The Dolphins responded quickly in the bottom of the second, plating three runs to move ahead 3–1. Jandel Brito and Jack Kehoe reached base to set the stage for Waterman, who delivered a three-run homer to give CSI its first lead of the day.
The Spartans answered in the third inning with four runs to reclaim a 5–3 advantage, but the Dolphins responded emphatically in the fourth. After Waterman drew a walk, Brandon Bartick and Julian Velazquez helped load the bases. Jamel Vera drove in two runs to tie the game at 5–5 before Bartick scored on a wild pitch to put CSI back in front. Vera later crossed the plate on a passed ball, and Kehoe added a key single that drove in two more runs, extending the Dolphins' lead to 9–5 heading into the fifth.
St. Thomas Aquinas surged again in the top of the fifth, scoring six runs to take an 11–9 lead. Once more, CSI answered in the bottom half of the inning with six runs of its own. Waterman highlighted the rally with his second home run of the game, a solo shot that marked the Dolphins' 15th run and gave them a 15–11 edge.
The Spartans refused to go away, pulling within one run at 15–14 after the sixth inning. However, Ryan Ortega provided the decisive blow with a two-run home run—his first collegiate homer—pushing the lead to 17–14 and sealing the victory.
Waterman finished 2-5 with three runs scored and four RBI, while Kehoe went 3-6 with four RBI. Brito and Vera each drove in two runs, and Bartick scored three times while going 1-2 at the plate.
On the mound, Kehoe made his first start of the season, pitching three innings and striking out three. Alex Martinez earned the win with two strikeouts in relief, and Michael Furst recorded the save after entering in the ninth inning with no outs.
The Dolphins (7–12, 4–7 ECC) return to action on April 3, when they host Mercy University in an ECC doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
