Nikolay Shevchenko was named the College of Staten Island’s Player of the Month for January 2008. Shevchenko is a 5-9 freshman swimmer on the Men’s Swimming and Diving team.
 
The Russian-born swimmer has been an important force behind the Dolphins success so far this season. Opening the month of January with a win against York College, Shevchenko added two golds. He broke his own CSI record by nearly ten seconds in the 1000 Freestyle timing in at 9:53.50. Despite their only loss of the season against Lehman a week later, Shevchenko didn’t hesitate to make a splash. Besides taking two first place wins, the team of Mohamed Hikal, Pavel Buyanov, Nick Levintov and Shevchenko timed in at 1.40.91 in the 200 Medley Relay. The record prior was 1.41.60. In the team’s triumph over SUNY-Maritime, Shevchenko grabbed three first place marks including the 200 Medley, 100 fly and 200 Freestyle
 
Shevchenko is no stranger to the record books. He holds eight individual records and is part of three relay records. In the team’s last match against SUNY-Old Westbury, Shevchenko came in with a time of 4:48.79 in the 500 Freestyle, breaking his previous record of 4:52.52.
 
 Shevchenko will look to help his team to victory in the CUNYAC Championships and Metropolitan Championships in February.
