DOLPHINS GRAB ONE GAME, BUT FALL SHORT VS. NJCU IN OPENER

The College of Staten Island women's volleyball team got off to a nice start in their 2011 season opener, but in the end it was New Jersey City University getting the better of the Dolphins in a 3-1 women's volleyball final at the John J. Moore Center in Jersey City.  The Dolphins took game one, 25-22, before falling in the final three games 25-22, 25-16, and 25-13.  The win improved the Gothic Knights to 1-0 while CSI, under new head coach Atef Dosse, start the season 0-1.

CSI got off to an outstanding 9-2 start to introduce game one, powered by four Pola Poskrobko service aces.  A 9-2 NJCU run later in the game made it 20-18, but then back-to-back kills by Poskrobko and Maricor Sacorro-Calleja gave CSI back the advantage, and Vasiliki Stergioula killed the final point to score CSI the game one win.

Unfortunately, CSI couldn't sustain the effort.  The Dolphins got off to a 4-1 lead in the second frame, and held their last lead at 18-17 on another Poskrobko ace, part of six on the night for the freshman.  But NJCU answered, and with the score deadlocked at 22-22, Kiara Martinez delivered an ace of her own and then CSI committed back-to-back attack errors to give the Gothic Knights the game two win.

CSI never could get going from there, never gaining a lead in games three or four.  The Dolphins committed 16 attack errors in the two games, while NJCU only tallied 10.

For the match, NJCU was powered behind Tabitha Jordan's 14 kills, helping her record her 500th career kill.  Brittany Erezuma tallied 13 kills, adding a blocked shot and three digs.  CSI was guided by Socorro-Calleja's 12 kills.  Poskrobko added eight kills, six aces and 15 digs, while fellow newcomer Jennifer Lewandowski notched a game-high 20 digs.

The win was NJCU's fifth straight over CSI, and the Gothic Knights now lead the all-time series, 8-5.
