Dolphins Win Big Over John Jay in Home Opener

Box Score STATEN ISLAND, NY. – The College of Staten Island volleyball went the distance Thursday evening to get the victory in five sets (23-25, 26-24, 18-25, 25-23, 15-12) over conference foe John Jay in its home opener. The Dolphins rallied from a set one loss to claim the hard fought win with victories in sets two, four and five. After CSI took the lead it was forced to hold off the Bloodhounds which attempted a late rally before the Dolphins claimed victory.

The win marked the second CUNYAC victory of the season for CSI who improved to 3-4 on the year and 2-2 in conference play.

Pola Poskrobko reached double-digits in the kills column for the third time this season as she registered a season-high 25 on the evening. The junior also led the team offensively hitting .233 on the night and added three service aces.

The first game of the evening set the tone for the entire match as the two teams traded points throughout the night and remained close, not allowing either team to get more than a couple points ahead of the other.

Sets one and two were closely fought battles, with game one seeing a total of 10 ties and six lead changes before John Jay pulled out the win. However, the Dolphins took the second set with a score of 26-24, after four ties and three lead changes.

Tied at one set each, John Jay began its rally with an impressive win in set three where the Bloodhounds took the largest lead of the match and posted a 25-18 set win to take the lead, 2-1.

Down one set, the Dolphins rallied to claim set four, 25-23 and push the match into a deciding fifth set where CSI went on to win, 15-12.

Jeanmarie Lewandowski had a big night for the Dolphins, recording a double-double with 16 assists and 22 digs. Freshman Loykee Victoria Wong also reach double-digits as she registered 18 digs, along with teammate Jennifer Samuel with 10 digs.

The Dolphins return to action Saturday, Sept. 21 when they host New Rochelle at 12pm, followed by Wesley at 4pm in a tri-match.
