Volleyball Off to Best Start After Splitting Weekend Matches

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 STATEN ISLAND, NY – The College of Staten Island women's volleyball team is off to its best start in program history, according to school record books, as the Dolphins split this weekend's competition, pushing their overall record to 4-5.

CSI hosted a tri-match Saturday, where it played host to the College of New Rochelle and Wesley College. In it's first match, the Dolphins defeated CNR, 3-1 (25-13, 19-25, 25-23, 25-15), while falling to Wesley, 0-3 (23-25, 19-25, 13-25), later in the afternoon.

In the earlier match, the Dolphins out-hit the Blue Angels, .123 to -0.23. CSI hit better than .500 for the first time this season, posting a .526 clip during the first set after registering 11 kills and just one error on 19 total attacks.

Leading the way offensively for Staten Island was Pola Poskrobko, who tallied 10 kills on the night, while teammates Selma Kolenovic and Jonaldy Edouard pitched in seven kills apiece.

Jennifer Samuel picked up assists on 22 of the Dolphins' 35 kills overall, and she added 11 digs, eight service aces and two kills to her stat line. Jeanmarie Lewandowski led the Dolphins with 24 digs, while Kolenovic added 11 of her own.

CSI hit .526 in the first set, but dropped to hit just .100 in set two, -.032 in set three and just .038 in the fourth. However, the Blue Angeles had struggled to find an offensive groove as they hit just .000 in sets one and three, .108 in set two and an incredible -.200 in the final set of the match.

The Dolphins took a two-hour break before taking the floor to face Wesley College, but that did not seem to make a difference as the visiting Wolverines were in the zone and ready to play.

Unlike the match against CNR, not a single CSI player was able to finish with double-digit kills or assists, leaving the Dolphins with a hitting percentage of just .045 for the match.

Outside of hitting percentage, the teams were relatively balanced on the evening. CSI managed 13 assists on the night to Wesley's 22, with Samuel's seven leading the way for the Dolphins. Staten Island also managed 24 kills to 38 for the Wolverines. Lewandowski registered 20 digs for the Dolphins.

Tatum Jones led Wesley with nine kills and four assisted blocks. Ashley Klein picked up 11 assists, while Lindsay Muzzo tallied three of her own.

The two teams went back and forth much of the first set, but the Wolverines pulled away around the 20-point mark and Wesley College never looked back. WC went on to outhit CSI in each set, .156 to 0.94 in set one, .238 to .160 in set two, and finished set three hitting .179 to -.094.

Next, the Dolphins hit the road and head to face St. Joe's – Brooklyn, Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 7:30pm.
