WOMEN'S SOCCER BACK IN WIN COLUMN WITH SHUTOUT OF SJC

Story Links

After a modest two-game winless skid the College of Staten Island women's soccer team is back on the winning side of the ledger, scoring a 3-0 win over St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn as part of non-conference play at the CSI Soccer Complex.  The win sent CSI to an overall record of 6-1-1, while the Bears fell to 3-2 with their three-game win streak now snapped.

After suffering a 5-1 loss to Kean University this week, CSI came in wanting to establish momentum on the hot and muggy afternoon in this one, and they did exactly that early.  After scoring a goal in her first-ever collegiate game, Brittany Bornstad did it again today, this time at exactly the seven minute mark to give CSI a 1-0 lead.  Brianna DiStefano served up the pass to Bornstad, who laced a curving shot from the corner of the box into the top shelf past an outstretched Lauren Quesada to open the scoring.

CSI kept the attack going, and then at the 25-minute mark, the Dolphins made four substitutions inserting fresh legs into the game for a spark.  The move worked, and a rejuvenated CSI started to move the ball better.  Less than two minutes after the final substitutions were made, CSI's Susan Aracena was able to head a ball into the twine on a beautiful corner placed by Natalia Sandor, her second assist of the season via the corner.

The score stood until half, as CSI took a 9-3 edge in shots into intermission as well.

In the second stanza, CSI dominated possession and they reeled off six shots after SJC got their first and only shot of the half in the first two minutes.  Their sixth paid off, as this time a Sandor pass from the top of the box found an open Victoria Sanchez down low, who placed a tough-angled shot into the corner of the net to give CSI its 3-0 lead at the 56:36 mark.

From there, CSI did not yield another shot and the Dolphins held fast to the 3-0 final.  CSI goalkeeping pair Maraya Jones and Kaila DiBenedetto shared the one-save shutout, while Quesada ended up making 13 saves in the losing effort.  Aracena led all scorers with five shots, four on goal.  The Dolphins used 10 substitutions to SJC's two.  The final shot tally was 28-3 in favor of the home Dolphins.

CSI is right back in action tomorrow, when they welcome in Montclair State University to the CSI Soccer Complex at 1:00pm.
