New York, NY | The College of Staten Island women's volleyball team had a chance to put a major dent in the CUNYAC standings but came up short tonight, falling 3-0 to Hunter College in a win that gave the Hawks the CUNYAC Regular Season Championship. The Hawks won by scores of 25-17, 25-14, and 25-17. With the win, Hunter improved to 20-6 overall and a perfect 8-0 in the CUNYAC, while CSI fell to 10-13, 5-2, respectively.
A 6-1 run by Hunter in the opening match got the home team started, but CSI forged an early 6-6 tie, helped along by a
Jay-La Guy kill. Hunter assumed control again on a 4-1 run thanks to a Miranda Hogan kill. CSI would make it interesting again when they cut the deficit to 17-15, but the Hawks would close on a 7-2 run thanks to two Isabelle Lawrence kills and a Sofia Caradonna ace, winning the set, 25-17.
The Hawks has an easier time in the second stanza. Kills by Taylor Haiduk and Marlena Budna got HC started on a 12-2 run to start things off, and despite the Dolphins keeping it even from there thanks to kills by
Margaret O'Malley-Rebovich,
Jacqueline Roloph and
Francesca Castellano, Hunter was able to ride the hot start to a 25-14 final.
Another fine start gave Hunter the edge in set three, this time getting off to a 7-2 start thanks to a Budna Kill and a Haiduk ace. Later, HC extended to 13-5 on a Caradonna ace, and there was little that coule be done from there as the Hawks coasted to a 25-17 win.
With their conference slate finished, Hunter captured the CUNYAC Regular Season crown with an 8-0 record, and will have the No. 1 seed in the CUNYAC Playoffs upcoming in late-October. At 5-2, the Dolphins can finish anywhere from third place to fifth place in the final standings. They finalize their CUNYAC slate next Tuesday against Baruch College.
