Staten Island, NY | The College of Staten Island women's tennis team waited a few extra days to introduce the 2018 campaign, but they made it worthwhile by scoring a 6-3 winner over St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn in non-conference play today at the CSI Tennis Center. The Dolphins will pull to 1-0 overall, while the Bears leveled to 1-1.
Play started with Doubles, and CSI was able to take a 2-1 lead after the three flights. Winning convincingly was the No. 3 tandem of
Hannah Bruschi and newcomer
Dilnoza Pulatova, as they slid easily past SJC's Jennifer Garcia and Devyn Stasky, 8-1.
One flight up at No. 2, CSI's
Tristiana Adragna and
Guetanie Romain broke open an early duel and were able to put away the Bears' team of Daniela Alva and Mariela Picon by an 8-2 count. CSI was almost able to pull off the trifecta, but a resilient SJC duo of Denise Trerotola and Valentina Velez, were able to escape
Katherine Villarroel and
Mariah DeGuia, 8-5.
When Singles opened, CSI needed only a split to secure a win, but they did one better by taking four out of the six flights. Leading the charge was No.4 DeGuia and No.5 Romain. They would both score 6-0, 6-0, wins over Garcia and Stansky, respectively. It took a little longer, but CSI clinched the match with a win by Bruschi at No. 3, as she defeated Velez, 6-0, 6-2.
CSI was able to score another win at No. 2 as Villarroel won by retirement over Alva, 5-7, 2-0. SJC was able to take a win at the top and bottom of the order. Trerotola scored a 6-4, 2-6, 10-8 win over Adragna in the pole position, while Pulatova fell to Picon at No. 6, 7-5, 6-0.
