DOLPHINS REEL OFF THIRD-STRAIGHT; DEFEAT YORK, 3-0

9/25/2018 8:54:00 PM

Box Score Jamaica, NY | The College of Staten Island women's volleyball team won for the third-straight time while staying perfect within the CUNYAC, sailing by York College as part of conference play tonight, 3-0.  CSI won the match convincingly by scores of 25-1, 25-17, and 25-5.  The win lifted CSI to 8-4 overall and 4-0 within the CUNYAC, while the Cardinals fell to 0-9, 0-6, respectively.

It was all CSI from start to finish in this one, starting with a dominating first set.  Shamonie Miller for York powered a kill to tie the score early at 1-1, but after that, CSI went on an unprecedented 24-0 run .  Francesca Castellano held service the entire way, and posted eight aces on her own.  She was helped out by the crisp attacking of Jay-La Guy, who posted four kills in the run and Celina Mendez who put up a pair of kills as well.

Things got more competitive in the second set, and after falling behind, 2-0. York came back to take a 7-4 lead, helped by another Miller kill and an ace on her service as well.  A Cassandra DiPietro ace for CSI got them back up, 9-8, and CSI never trailed from there.  The Dolphins' most pivotal run came later, as up 13-10, they went on a 7-2 run that put the game out of reach, powered by two DiPietro kills and an Arianna Spears ace.  CSI would score their final three points off of York attack errors.

Much like the first set CSI cruised to a convincing win in the third and final set.  The Dolphins scored the first five points, with Spears adding three more aces.  CSI then went on a 13-0 bender, helped along by three Castellano aces and three Guy kills.  A Margaret O'Malley-Rebovich kill ended it later, at 25-5.

CSI was led by Guy's nine kills, next to just one error in 16 attempts.  Spears put up a game-high 23 assists, while Castellano set a CSI single game high with 13 aces.  She also added 12 digs to lead CSi in that department as well.

CSI, which has already eclipsed their win total from 2017, will look to keep things moving in a positive direction this weekend, when they host a non-conference tri-match at the Tank on Saturday.  They are slated to play Maritime College at 9:00am and New Jersey City University at 1:00pm.
