Staten Island, NY | The College of Staten Island Women's Soccer Team played their regular-season finale today at the CSI Soccer Complex and were defeated by the Violets of NYU by a final score of 5-0. Following a pregame Senior Day ceremony that recognized the Dolphins' six graduating players,
Najet Hessam,
Rita Henriquez,
Natalia Sandor,
Nicole Mignone,
Rebecca D'Aloia, and
Lizbeth Aparicio, it was all NYU on the pitch. The Violets improved to 10-5 with a 5-0 routing of the Dolphins and CSI wraps up the season 6-7-1 following the loss.
During the first half, NYU only registered two shots on goal but constantly kept the pressure on the Dolphins defense and goalkeeper
Samantha Beaudreault. CSI struggled to maintain any time of possession and the Violets constantly had the Dolphins on their heels. As for the CSI attack, the Dolphins hardly crossed midfield in half number one and were limited to only a single shot through the first forty-five minutes.
Following the intermission, half number two was all Violets as they continued to dominate possession and began to convert on their numerous scoring chances. Six minutes after played resumed,
Rebecca D'Aloia attempted to chase down a potential scoring chance for NYU from behind but was whistled for the foul in the box. The penalty kick that followed was a perfectly placed shot into the bottom left corner of goal by Ellie Marks which was met with an equally impressive save attempt by Beaudreault. In this spot, it was the precise shot that prevailed and the Violets took a 1-0 lead.
Less than two minutes later, Marks got into the assist column as well whe she delivered a cross from the corner onto the foot of Spritle Hirano who netted her first of the season. Once again less than three minutes later, Marks found the back of the net for the second time on the receiving end of a beautiful through ball from Gabrielle Funk. After getting the ball on her foot, Marks was able to dribble past Beaudreault, who attempted to meet the ball at the top of the box, and easily place it into the empty net.
Leading 3-0, the Violets converted on their fourth score in eleven minutes when Cora Creighton positioned herself outside of the far post and scored off of another cross, this time from the opposite corner. The scoring wrapped in the 68' when Jade Keane tallied her second goal of the season after getting behind Beaudreault on the receiving end of another well-placed NYU cross. No goals were scored by either side during the final twenty-two minutes, the Violets attempting five shots and the Dolphins taking only one in the final minutes.
It was a game to remember for Ellie Marks who picked up a pair of goals and an assist. She assisted the second goal scored by Spritle, book-ended by two goals of her own. The fourth Violets goal scored by Creighton was assisted by Sydney Jo Presnell and Nalani Ogawa with the final goal by Keane being assisted by Hadley Bushala. For the Dolphins, their lone shots belonged to
Gabrielle Chirco and
Mirsade Pelinkovic, one coming late in the first half and the other coming in the final minutes of the second half.
CSI wraps up the 2019 season, 6-7-1 and a 4-0-1 against their former conference, the CUNYAC. Next year will bring the program's second year as a provisional NCAA Division II member and they will begin full-time membership in the East Coast Conference.
