Purchase, NY | The College of Staten Island Women's Soccer team pulled to within a game of .500, scoring another win over a CUNYAC side, this time with a 3-0 triumph over City College of New York at Purchase College in Purchase, NY. The Dolphins moved to 4-5 overall, while CCNY fell 5-6.
Outscoring CUNYAC competition, 12-0, coming in to this one, CSI wanted to continue the dominating play inside the conference, and they were seemingly in control of this one with a heavy percentage of the attack time. After a pair of saves early on both sides, CSi started to ramp up the attack, peppering the Beavers goal on a number of occasions.
Finally, after seven shots and a trio of Catherine Landkamp saves, CSI got on the register with a booming direct kick from
Mirsade Pelinkovic that banked in off of the post, giving CSI a critical, 1-0, lead at the 22:02 mark of the opening stanza. Landkamp would make another pair of saves for the Beavers but with time winding down in the first half,
Nermina Bracic launched a 25-yarder that tucked in under the crossbar and over the outstretched hands of Landkamp to give CSI a 2-0 edge with just 4:56 to play in the first half.
From there, CSI had the luxury of keeping their forces back on defense and used their counterattack to get looks at more insurance goals. While CCNY struggled to connect in the lower third of the field, CSI put the game on ice with Pelinkovic's second goal of the game, an empty-netter on a rebound after Landkamp made a save on
Amber Mitchell in the 52nd minute.
Meanwhile, the CSI defense stayed strong, as CCNY couldn't muster a second half shot until the 73rd minute. It wasn't until the 80th minute that the Beavers took a shot on target, parried by CSI keeper Lyubormira Stefanova. The Dolphins were stout from there and let the final hold up as 3-0.
CSI enjoyed a 22-6 edge in shots (14-3 on goal) . CCNY had a slight, 3-2, edge in corner kicks. Landkamp made a hefty 11 saves in defeat while Lyubormira made three in her first career shutout. There were no bookings in the game.
CSI will now have a full week off before they are in action again. They will resume next Saturday, when they host Lehman College at the CSI Soccer Complex at 11:30 am.
