Brooklyn, NY | The College of Staten Island Women's Soccer team snapped a three-game losing streak tonight with a dominant 9-0 victory over Medgar Evers College. The Dolphins took the early lead in the fifth minute and never looked back, ultimately scoring nine first-half goals. The 9-0 halftime score would stand the rest of the way as CSI picked up their second win of the season to improve to 2-3 and kept Medgar Evers winless at 0-5.
The Dolphins wasted no time getting ahead as
Gabrielle Chirco registered her first goal of the season in the fifth minute to give CSI a lead that they would never relinquish. The ten minutes that followed represented the longest Dolphins scoring drought of the first half, but five CSI goals between minutes 15 and 30 put the game out of reach well before the halftime break. A goal by
Jordan Yagos, her second of the season, put the Dolphins up 2-0 before
Lizbeth Aparicio added her first of the year to make it 3-0. Also netting her second of the season was
Mirsade Pelinkovic to make it 4-0 in the 19'. This was followed by back-to-back goals from
Amber Mitchell, her second and third of 2019, that extended the Dolphins lead to 6-0.
With her team already ahead by six and having scored two goals in the game, Mitchell wasn't done yet as she made it three scores in less than seven minutes when she found the back of the net for the third time in the 32'.
Najet Hessam and
Rita Henriquez would wrap up the first-half scoring for the Dolphins with each scoring their first of the season, Hessam in the 42' and Henriquez in the 44'. Ahead 9-0 entering the intermission, CSI relented on the attack in the second half and did not score again for the remainder of the game.
For the Dolphins, seven different players tallied a goal with Mitchell contributing a hat trick to make it four goals in her last two games. In addition to her goal, Aparicio had five assists, tied for the second-highest mark in CSI single game history, with
Danie Duka and
Natalia Sandor each picking up multiple assists as well, Duka with three and Sandor with a pair. The Cougars did not record a single shot in the game with all 39 Dolphins shots, 26 of them on goal, coming in the first half.
Up next for the Dolphins is another meeting with a CUNYAC opponent this Wednesday at home when they take on York College in the back-end of a CSI Soccer doubleheader. The men will face Medgar Evers in the early game at 2:00 PM with the women taking the pitch against the Cardinals at 4:00 PM.
