Staten Island, NY | The College of Staten Island Men's Tennis team was the first spring sport to get underway in 2020, and they fell to their NCAA Division I neighbors, Wagner College, 7-0, in a match held Sunday night at the CSI Tennis Center's indoor courts. CSI started the campaign at 0-1, while the Seahawks lifted to 3-0.
Play started with Doubles, and Wagner was able to win every flight to earn the one point. In the top-flight position, Wagner's Dylan Walters and Omar Loutfy were able to spoil the debut of CSI freshman tandem
Marcos Diaz and
Niklas Koehne, by a score of 8-3, and one flight lower, Tejasvi Mehra and Hans Ohrner had similar success against CSI's
Nikolozi Davlianidze and
Mark Karpovas, 8-1. In the final spot, CSI's two veterans, sophomore
Ivi Selenica and senior
Tao Lin, could not find a win over WC's Siddharth Anand and Mohammed Hussain, 8-2.
When play switched to Singles, Wagner was able to capitalize by winning all six flights. The most contested flight came at No.3, where Mehra was able to slide past CSI's Koehne, 6-1, 6-2. CSI's
Matthew Kotlyar was able to score an appearance at No. 6 but fell in straight-sets to Abhunav Magow. In the battle of the top-flight aces, WC's Ohrner got through CSI's Diaz, 6-0, 6-2.
CSI will have a lot of time before their next meet, scheduled for a road test against St. Thomas Aquinas College, a premiere program within CSI's new East Coast Conference. Match is scheduled for Saturday, February 29, at 4PM in Sparkill, NY.
