OFFENSIVE ONSLAUGHT BY ERSKINE HALTS CSI WIN STREAK AT FOUR

Myrtle Beach, SC  |  The College of Staten Island Baseball team wrapped their Myrtle beach trip with a doubleheader against Erskine College earlier today and saw their four-game winning streak come to and end with a pair of lopsided defeats, 16-2 in game one and 22-1 in game two.  The losses dropped the Dolphins to 4-2 through six games to open the season and the 38-run onslaught across the two games improved the Fleet to 12-8.

GAME ONE - STATEN ISLAND 2, ERSKINE 16
Andrew Nathan got his first start of the season for CSI and things got off to a shaky start in the opening frame when a Livan Reinoso two-RBI single plated the game's first two runs.  Things didn't get any better in the second either as the Fleet plated two more, one on a sacrifice fly another on a wild pitch.  This put the Dolphins in a four-run hole early, but Erskine would proceed to break the game wide open in the third.

Another nine Erskine runs put them ahead by 13 before a Peter Lombardo RBI-single, one of his three hits in the game, put the Dolphins got on the scoreboard for the first time in the bottom half of the third.  However, the Fleet got right back to work in the fourth adding another two runs, and CSI would score for the final time in the fifth to make it 14-2.  Erskine plated another pair in the 6th to account for the game's final two runs as they cruised to a 16-2 victory in the day's first game.

Nathan was the losing pitcher for CSI in his first outing of the season as he surrendered 10 runs, 8 earned, on six base-hits.  Weston Kerley picked up the win for Erskine allowing one run and five hits in four innings of work.  Five different Dolphins accounted for CSI's eight hits, three belonging to Lombardo and two more belonging to Khalid Zahrieh.  Three players tallied multiple hits for Erskine, Reinoso with two, Trevor Lesane with three and Jaisen Randolph with two.

GAME TWO - STATEN ISLAND 1, ERSKINE 22
Just as they did in game one, the Fleet opened the game by scoring a pair in each of the first two innings to go ahead 4-0 through two.  This time, home runs accounted for much of the early scoring as a Reinoso solo shot put Erskine up 2-0 before back-to-back long balls by Zach Carter and Kane Fisher made it 4-0.  However, Reinoso wasn't done yet as he took Dolphins starter Salvatore Trancucci IV deep for the second time in the third to put his team ahead 5-0.

Behind by five entering the fourth, CSI got on the board with a Giacchino Virone single to make it 5-1, but this would account for all of the Dolphins scoring the rest of the way.  Across the next two innings, the Fleet would bury the Dolphins beneath a 21-run deficit, scoring six more in the fourth and another eleven in the sixth.  Two of those runs came on a two-run shot by Reinoso, his third homer of the game and a record fifth by an opponent in a single game against the Dolphins.

Trancucci, the losing pitcher, allowed 10 runs, 9 earned, on eleven hits and six CSI errors in the game resulted in the final twelve runs scored by the Fleet, eight against Alexis Santos and four against Thomas Joyce, going down as unearned.  Josh Walton earned his first win in what was his third decision of the season striking out eight across his four innings of work.  Reinoso's remarkable game for Erskine included a 5-for-5 performance, three home-runs, and six RBI's while no Dolphin recorded multiple hits in the game.

The Dolphins will have some time to regroup before their next game as they will face their second Division II opponent of the season when they take on Mercy College in a doubleheader on Sunday, March 8th.
