2019-20 ATHLETIC AWARDS SHOWCASE: MEN'S TENNIS

5/13/2020 1:00:00 PM

This week, the College of Staten Island Department of Athletics is showcasing their 2019-20 Award Winners, unveiled for the first time here on csidolphins.com and on social media.  Normally reserved for unveiling at the Annual Athletic Awards Banquet in early-May, each day this week will feature award presentations throughout the day.  Individual team awards are bestowed to students by their respective coaching staff, with major, departmental awards awarded by committee, to be announced at the close of the week.

Our awards week celebration continues with Men's Tennis honorees:

It was an abridged season for Men's Tennis, with stoppages taking place in mid-March wiping out the majority of the team's competitive schedule.  The result was just two matches played, hardly enough to consider it a worthwhile year, but enough to display the dedication and competitive nature of the group that was collected under returning coach Paul Ricciardi.  The team had lofty goals for what would have been their final turn through the CUNYAC, looking for a lot to prove.  They never did get that chance, but the team disbanded having accomplished a great deal, coming together with resolution and focus that had many eyeing big results in 2020.

Here are the award winners for Men's Tennis:

Awards Banquet - Team Specific Award

MARCOS DIAZ - FRESHMAN - MOST VALUABLE PLAYER
Obviously the body of work was limited, but Diaz displayed clear signals that he would be the team's clear-cut No. 1 Singles player from the get-go, and he proved that with exceptional practices and in his only two competitive meets, battling against Division I Wagner College's and St. Thomas Aquinas' best Singles players.  With a terrific approach to the game, the sky certainly would be the limit for a player of his caliber.

NIKLAS KOEHNE - FRESHMAN - ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
Hailing from Germany, Koehne, like Diaz, displayed impeccable promise and was poised to become one of CSI's leaders on the court.  He was a mainstay at practice and in game day preparation with a great attacking style that likely would have made him one of the CUNYAC's finest players at the No. 2 position.  Like Diaz, Koehne has plenty of upside and was seen as a player with tremendous development potential.

SHERYDAR CHOUDRY - SOPHOMORE - COACHES AWARD
Although Choudry was unable to fit into a match this season, his improvement as a tennis player and his ability to be there for his teammates, keep the unit strong and focused, adding levity, is often a calling card to his status on the team and a direct reason why he was honored with the team's Coaches Award.  A great leader, he is someone who the entire team counted on as a dedicated and motivated presence to support and sustain the team in 2020.
