Staten Island, NY – In their 2021 season finale, the College of Staten Island Women's Soccer team suffered a shutout defeat in their first-ever meeting with the Bridgeport University Purple Knights by a 4-0 score. After two first-half goals that grazed the fingertips of Dolphins goalkeeper Sara Villacres ultimately found the back of the net, Bridgeport added two more in the final twelve minutes on their way to their fifth straight win. The defeat brought the Dolphins record to 3-14-1 overall, 2-6-1 against the ECC. The Purple Knights finish the season 11-6-1 overall, 5-3-1 in conference play.
KEY MOMENTS
The Purple Knights opened the scoring early in the twelfth minute when Morgan Dodge sent a long shot off the fingertips of Sara Villacres, underneath the crossbar and in. However, this would not be the last time Villacres got a piece of a Bridgeport goal as a Torri Smith header also deflected off the glove of Villacres and in during the forty-fourth minute. The lead remained two until the final twelve minutes when Smith scored her second of the game followed by an eighty-sixth-minute goal by Livia Busin.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Shots favored Bridgeport 18-3 overall, 14-2 in shots on goal. Bridgeport also attempted all four of the game's corner kicks and got the better of the foul tally with the Dolphins committing twelve fouls and Bridgeport committing five. For the Dolphins, it was their fourth consecutive shutout defeat, and for the Purple Knights, the win was their fifth straight.
DOLPHINS OF THE GAME
Today's Dolphins of the game are the only two players who have played in and started every game for CSI this season. Jenna Como and Megan Meagher both got the starting nod for the eighteenth time in the team's final match of the season today and played the full ninety minutes. However, this has been the norm for both players as each has played ninety minutes or more ten times this season.
