Staten Island, NY | The College of Staten Island wrapped up their three-game set against East Coast Conference foe D'Youville College today scoring a pair of come-from-behind victories, 8-5 in game one and 7-3 in game two. The 6-14 Dolphins have now won three straight and improve to 6-12 in ECC play while the Saints fall to 2-22 overall, 0-18 in conference play.
GAME ONE
After trailing 4-0 and being held hitless through the first four innings, the Dolphins rode a late inning surge past D'Youville to turn the four-run deficit into a three run victory.
The Saints opened the scoring inthe third behind a pair of two-out RBI base hits, a triple by Jeremy Glinski and a single by Alex Dzimian. The Saints would then tack on another run in both the fourth and the fifth, the second coming home on another RBI hit by Dzimian. This put the Dolphins behind 4-0 still in search of their first hit entering the bottom half of the fifth.
It was in the sixth that the CSI offense finally cracked the run column after two singles and an error loaded the bases. With the bases juiced and still nobody out, Peter Lombardo scorched a double down the right field line to plate the first two CSI runs. However, Jared Glowniak would prevent further damage and limit CSI to a pair of runs in the inning.
The Dolphins would load the bases once again in the seventh, this time plating two more runs on bases loaded walks of Lombardo and Angel Santiago by Saints reliever Adam Lampman. Salvatore Trancucci IV would give CSI the lead immediately thereafter on a sacrifice fly, but the inning was brought to a premature close when Lombardo was tagged out trying to advance to third on the fly ball. Now ahead 5-4, the CSI lead wouldn't last long as the Saints would quickly get even in the next half inning.
In the top half of the eighth it would be the Saints loading the bases against CSI starter Kevin Ryan and relief pitcher Adam Gonzalez. In a crucial at-bat for the Saints, Shane Critelli would face Gonzalez as a pinch-hitter and tally the game-tying RBI after being hit by a pitch. This evened up the score at five and prompted another CSI pitching change as Steven Collica came out of the CSI bullpen to record the third out and keep the score even at 5-5.
With Friday's starter Dzimian back on the mound, CSI loaded the bases for the third straight inning, once again before registering a single out. However, Dzimian struck out Nick Cipoletti and Thomas Marten back-to-back leaving it to Shendi Ulaj with two away. On a fly ball to center, Alex Liem was unable to make the routine grab, clearing the bases and putting the Dolphins in front for good, 8-5. The Saints would eventually bring the tying run to the plate against Collica in the ninth following two more base hits, but CSI would hold on to the lead and make it two straight against their conference rival.
Collica would earn the win in relief while Dzimian suffered the loss, the Saints' eight inning error ultimately proving to be the difference-maker on the scoreboard. Glinski and Dzimian each had three hits for the Saints while Marten was the only Dolphin to tally multiple hits with two. Lombardo added three RBI's, two coming on a double and another on a walk.
GAME TWO
The first three innings of game two featured a pitcher's duel between Saints starter Lampman and Dolphins starter Trancucci as both kept the opponent off of the board for the first three innings. It was in the fourth when Trancucci ran into trouble after a pair of singles and a hit batter loaded the bases with nobody out. It was Critelli who kicked off the scoring with a two-RBI single before Renato Quinones made it 3-0 with a sacrifice fly.
Three would be the Dolphins' deficit entering the bottom of the fourth when they wasted no time responding with two runs of their own. A walk and a single put two on for CSI and with two outs in the frame Collica was called upon to pinch-hit with a pair in scoring position. Collica delivered with a two-RBI double into the right-center field gap bringing the Dolphins back to within one, 3-2.
The Saints would not score again in the game, but the Dolphins weren't finished as they took the lead for good in the fifth. Marten opened the inning with a double and scored after Ulaj reached on a throwing error behind him. Two more CSI doubles will follow, one by Lombardo and another by Santiago. Louie Mandile then put an exclamation point on the inning with another double, this one scoring both Lombardo and Santiago to put CSI ahead 5-3.
Marten continued his strong day at the plate with a sixth inning triple and was chased home by Lombardo on an RBI single. Brian Birkhead added another RBI base-hit to cap off the CSI scoring and make it 7-3. Trancucci returned to the mound in search of the complete game and set the Saints down in order to close out the Dolphins victory and a season-series sweep of D'Youville.
Trancucci, the winning pitcher, did not allow more than a single hit to any Saint while Marten collected three more for the Dolphins. Mandile, Birkhead, and Lombardo each added two of their own for CSI and were all integral parts of the third come-from-behind Dolphins win in three games. Lampman was tagged with the loss as the Saints were denied their first win in conference play.
The Dolphins will return to action with a double-header at home on Friday against fellow CUNY program and East Coast Conference school Queens College at 2PM with only the first of the two games counting in the ECC standings.
