WOMEN'S SOCCER ENDS SEASON WITH 1-1 DRAW AGAINST QUEENS

Queens, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Soccer Team ended the 2022 season earlier tonight with a 1-1 draw against CUNY and East Coast Conference rival Queens College.  The draw, the third of the season for CSI, brings their record to 2-9-3 overall and 2-5-1 against the ECC.  The Knights finish their season 2-10-3 overall and 2-4-2 against the conference.

The first half saw the two teams combine for just five shots and neither side was able to find the back of the net through the first 45 minutes.  However, less than four minutes into the second half the scoreless tie was broken on an own goal by Queens.  The Knights inadvertently deflected the ball into their own net off of Marina Pappas to give the Dolphins their first lead of the match.

The Dolphins lead would be incredibly short-lived as just three minutes after the own goal the Knights would even up the score.  Sara Messemer would score for the third time this season of a through ball from Julia Ragone.  The scoring shot would be one of fourteen Queens shot attempts in the second half, and they would go on to outshoot the Dolphins 14-5 in the last 45 minutes.  Despite the distinct advantage in shots, neither team would score the rest of the way and the match would end in a 1-1 tie.

For the Dolphins, tonight's match concluded their first season as a full NCAA Division II member.  With this full membership came the opportunity to qualify for the East Coast Conference playoffs for the first time in program history.  2022 also marked the second full season as Head Coach for Brendan Guzman who took over right before the 2021 season got underway.  The Dolphins graduated five seniors this year and finished the year in seventh in the East Coast Conference.
