DOLPHINS FALL JUST SHORT IN POSTSEASON BID WITH LOSS TO MOLLOY IN SEASON FINALE

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Soccer Team battled until the final horn but came up just short in their bid for a spot in the East Coast Conference playoffs earlier today as they lost to Molloy University 1-0.  The loss sees the Dolphins end their season 4-7-4 with a 2-5-1 record in conference play.  The Lions secured first round home field advantage with the win and stayed perfect against the Dolphins in three meetings.  Molloy ends the season 8-4-5 overall with a 4-2-2 conference record.

Both teams had excellent scoring chances in the first half, but the Dolphins created the first big opportunity of the game on a shot by Isabella Radovini.  After working her way up the pitch and into the final 18, Radovini beat her marker and fired a shot from a favorable angle while moving in on goal.  The shot curved just wide of the far post and the match remained scoreless.  Moments later, Molloy was able to play Olivia Ingenito through for a one-on-one opportunity against CSI goalkeeper Sara Villacres.  However, Villacres made the stop and helped send the game to halftime without a goal.

Early in the second half, the Dolphins generated their next great chance of off a set piece.  After earning a corner kick, the Dolphins set up an opportunity for Nadia Evola on a volley attempts from in close.  Evola got a clean release on her break towards the near post, but Elyse Munoz made an impressive stop and once again kept the game scoreless.  It wasn't until there were less than 10 minutes remaining that Lauren Marinello scored from just outside the box to give Molloy the lead, and this was all of the offense they would need.  The long shot put the Dolphins a a position where they needed two goals, and there simply wasn't enough time to generate the chances they needed in a 1-0 defeat.

The Dolphins miss the playoffs for the second consecutive season since becoming eligible for the ECC postseason.  However, the team concludes the season having demonstrated great improvement in just about every metric as compared to 2022.  The team will graduate seven seniors this season which leaves vacancies the team will need to fill ahead of the 2024 season, but many of the team's newcomers are also likely to see increase roles in the absence of some key graduates.  As for the Lions, they will begin the ECC playoffs on Thursday with a first round matchup against Queens College.
