DOLPHINS DROP SENIOR DAY FINALE TO SAINTS, 11-8

Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Baseball Team ended the 2023 season this afternoon as they dropped their season finale against the Saints by a final score of 11-8.  The Dolphins end their season 17-26 overall and 9-15 against the East Coast Conference.  D'Youville finishes their season 20-24 overall and 10-12 against the conference.

Ahead of first pitch, the Dolphins honored eleven seniors who will be departing the program following their graduation this year.   Frank RetzlaffJohn CastiglioneJake MyersAngel SantiagoNick CippolettiShendi UlajMichael CroccoKevin RyanSteven CollicaDomenick Castiglione, and John Esposito were all recognized in the pregame presentation which included a look back at some of their career accolades and words from the CSI coaching staff.  Each was also presented with a frame commemorating their career at CSI and were joined for an on field photo by family and friends.

The Saints got on the board for the first time in the second inning on a groundout and scored twice more in the third behind a base hit and a Dolphins error.  CSI then responded with a big third inning as they scored their first run on a bases-loaded RBI single by Vincent Weigele.  With the bases still loaded, senior John Castiglione drove a grand slam over the right field wall to put the Dolphins ahead for the first time, 5-3.  D'Youville responded by scoring the next three runs, one in the fourth, one in the fifth, and one in the sixth, to take the lead 6-5.

Trailing by one, the Dolphins took the lead back on a two-RBI single by AJ Vigliotti.  Now behind 7-6, the Saints scored five unanswered runs across the next three innings.  Entering the bottom of the ninth trailing 11-7, the Dolphins scored once on a wild pitch.  Needing one more baserunner to bring the tying run to the plate, the game ended on a fly out to center field and the Saints took the win 11-8.

Shendi Ulaj and Weigele each had two hits for the Dolphins and Castiglione drove in four runs behind his grand slam.  In his final start as a Dolphin, Steven Collica allowed three earned runs on three hits.  In relief, Frank Retzlaff and Kevin Ryan each made their final appearance as Dolphins as well.

The Dolphins finish the 2023 season sixth in the East Coast Conference with a 9-15 record against the ECC.  Their overall win total of 17 is their highest single-season win total since the 2018 season.  Next season, D'Youville will be eligible for the postseason which will make the road to the playoffs a bit more difficult for the Dolphins.  CSI will also see the addition of another recruiting class that will need to help fill the vacancy left behind by the eleven seniors that will be departing the program this year.
