VILLACRES SETS CSI DIVISION II SINGLE-GAME SAVES RECORD IN 2024 SEASON FINALE

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Soccer Team played their their final match of the 2024 season earlier today as they hosted the Pace University.  Though the Dolphins suffered a 3-0 defeat, it was a strong effort in goal for CSI goalkeeper Sara Villacres.  The senior, playing in her final game as a Dolphin, set the program's Division II single-game saves record with 16.  However, the Dolphins finish the season 0-12-3 and the Setters improve to 4-6-5.  Pace also takes a 2-0 lead in the all-time series after defeating the Dolphins for the second time in as many seasons.

Caitlyn Thompson recorded the first shot of the match in the opening minutes, but from there it was a relentless Pace attack that accounted for the majority of the scoring chances.   The Setters attempted twelve consecutive shots following the first CSI attempt, but Villacres was able to keep the game scoreless with four early saves.  The senior would stop an additional two shots during the fifteen minutes that followed the initial onslaught, but the Setters finally broke through in the 39th minute.  Hannah Rautenstrauch connected on a redirection in front of the CSI net following a Pace corner kick and sent the game into the half with her team leading, 1-0.

Pace opened the second half with three consecutive shots before the fourth found the back of the net off the foot of Taylor Moyer.  The Setters then continued to pile up the shots through the 72nd minute when they extended their lead to three on a Kelly Dubois goal.  Riley Hammond registered a pair of shots in the half and Jenna Como added another CSI shot attempt, but the Dolphins were never able to break through for a goal as they dropped their season finale, 3-0.

Several Dolphins played in their final game with the program today including Emily Albano, Megan Meagher, Isabela Castro, Arielle Uy, Isabella Radovini, Kelly Buckley, Villacres and Como.  Nadia Evola kicked off Senior Day on Saturday and was inactive for what would have been her final game today.  Team manager Allura Surat was also serving in her role for the final time during today's match.

With a large graduating class, the Dolphins will have plenty of work to do when recruiting for the 2025 season.  For the latest on the Women's Soccer program throughout the offseason, check the team's landing page for updates here.
