DOLPHINS AND MAVERICKS COMBINE FOR 54 RUNS IN SPLIT OF ELECTRIFYING DOUBLEHEADER

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Baseball Team opened their series with the Mercy University Mavericks at home last night, and the Dolphins will continue their doubleheader on the road against the Mavericks today at 1:00 PM.  In a pair of nine-inning games at the CSI Baseball Complex on Thursday, the Dolphins and Mavericks combined for 54 runs in a doubleheader split.  The Dolphins came from seven runs down to win game one, 11-9.  In game two, the Mavericks erased a 10-1 third-inning deficit to win, 18-16.  The Dolphins end the day 11-21 and Mercy finished the day 18-15.  Both teams enter Friday's doubleheader 5-5 in conference play this season.

GAME 1
The Mavericks opened the scoring in game one with two runs two runs on two hits against Ryan Kehoe in the first inning.  CSI then quickly went down 1-2-3 in the bottom half, and the Mavericks got right back to work at the plate.  Mercy would score five times on four hits in the second inning to break the game open, 7-0.  However, the Dolphins were able to load the bases in the home half of the second before two straight infield flies left the bases loaded with two out.  From here, the Dolphins rallied with four straight RBI hits by Nicholas Rodriguez, Chirs Polemeni, Jack Kehoe, and AJ Vigliotti.  This brought the Dolphins all the way to within one run, 7-6.

The one-run Mercy lead would hold until the fourth before the Dolphins finally got even.  With one out in the frame, a Jaden Waterman sacrifice fly scored Kehoe to tie the game.  The Dolphins did strand the go-ahead run on third, but CSI would break through to take the lead in the fifth.  A single and a walk put two on, and a balk advanced both runners into scoring position.  Another sacrifice fly, this time by Rodriguez, brought home the run.  Now trailing for the first time, Mercy tied the score at eight in the sixth.  CSI then took the lead back on an RBI double by Hunter in the bottom half before Mercy tied the score a second time in the seventh.  Once again, CSI would take the lead back in the bottom half, this time for good.  Leading 10-8, the Dolphins added an insurance run in the eighth, and Jack Kehoe closed the door to earn the six-out save in the ninth.

Vigliotti led the Dolphins with three hits, and both Kehoe and Rodriguez drove in three runs.  Four more Dolphins had multiple hits as the team finished with 13 in the victory.  CSI also drew eight walks, and the Dolphins bullpen combined to allow just two earned runs in seven innings.  Michael Santoriello went four, Anthony Salmonese pitched one inning, and Kehoe earned the six-out save.

GAME 2
In one of the wildest games in the Division II history of the CSI Baseball program, the Dolphins turned a 1-0 first-inning deficit into a 2-1 lead behind a 2-RBI single by Vigliotti.  This score stood until the third when the Dolphins put together one of their most productive innings of the season.  Vigliotti opened the scoring with a three-run shot.  Hunter then connected on a solo homer, and with the bases loaded, a Polemeni grand slam gave the Dolphins eight runs in the inning.  Now trailing 10-1, the Mavericks wasted no time beginning their comeback.  Mercy scored seven times in the road fourth and forced the Dolphins to go to the bullpen.  CSI would finally escape the inning leading 10-8, and a Jandel Brito ground ball would bring home one Dolphins run in the home half of the frame.  Mercy then scored three in the fifth to tie the score at 11-11, but the Dolphins responded with another run on a Jack Kehoe bunt in the bottom half.

The Dolphins led by one entering the fifth inning, but this would be the last time that CSI would hold the lead.  Mercy went in front for good on a 2-RBI single by John Nisco, and the Mavericks would go on to score six times in the inning.  Mercy would add one more in the seventh, their final run of the game, and now led 18-12.  In the home seventh, Polemeni, Vigliotti, and Hunter all connected on their second home run of the game.  This brought home four to pull the Dolphins to within two, 18-16.  However, the CSI comeback bid would end here as the Mavericks bullpen held the Dolphins scoreless in the eighth and ninth.

Polemeni, Vigliotti and Hunter each hit two home runs in the game, and Vigliotti collected 7 RBI.  Kehoe was a perfect 4-4 at the plate, and the Dolphins finished the game with 12 hits and 8 walks as a team.  The Dolphins used five pitchers in the game highlighted by 3.2 innings of relief from Ryan Fiore.  The junior did not allow an earned run and limited the Mavericks to just three hits out of the bullpen.

The series between the Dolphins and Mavericks concludes tomorrow with a second straight doubleheader scheduled for 1:00 PM.  Game one will be a nine-inning game with game two being a seven-inning game.
