STATEN ISLAND COACHING LEGEND TOM TIERNEY JOINS CSI BASEBALL STAFF

Staten Island, NY - It was announced earlier today that the College of Staten Island Baseball Team had added Tom Tierney to their coaching staff for the 2025-26 season.  Tierney, a former professional player, high school coach, and educator, brings plenty of experience and a championship pedigree to the program.  He has 25 years of experience coaching at the high school level and is both a five-time PSAL City Champion and four-time Coach of the Year award winner.

Alongside CSI Baseball Head Coach Michael Mauro, Tierney spent three season playing at John Jay from 1988-1990.  It was during this time that the two formed an enduring friendship that helped facilitate Tierney's move to the CSI coaching staff.  "Having Tom coach alongside me is both an exciting and emotional moment for me," Mauro said.  "We played college ball together at John Jay for two years before he transferred to CSI, and I was his assistant at both New Utrecht  and Tottenville."

Following his time at John Jay, Tierney transferred to CSI where he obtained a degree in Sociology.  In the final year of his collegiate playing career, he posted a .504 batting average and a 1.580 OPS.  He still ranks among the all-time program leaders in single-season batting average, hits, RBI, home runs, and slugging.  Following an extraordinary season in his lone year as a Dolphin, he was named an All-American and went on to sign a professional contract with the Atlanta Braves.

Tierney spent two years in the Braves Minor League system before moving on to a storied coaching career that places him among the most decorated Baseball coaches in Staten Island history.  After spending five years as an assistant on his father's staff at Tottenville High School, he spent three seasons as the head coach at New Utrecht High School from 1997-1999.  Mauro was his assistant for two of these three seasons, and he joined Tierney at Tottenville for the first seven years of his tenure as Pirates head coach from 2000-2007.  Mauro departed Tottenville to join the Dolphins coaching staff in 2008, but he credits Tierney for his growth and development as a coach.

"I learned how to coach from him throughout all those years," Mauro recalled. To have everything come full circle and have him next to me in the dugout is surreal."  Upon hearing of Tierney's retirement from teaching, Mauro reached out and jokingly asked if his longtime friend was bored of retirement.  He then extended the invite for Tierney to join him on the Dolphins coaching staff, and it didn't take long for that offer to be accepted.

During a tenure at Tottenville that spanned from 2000-2016, Tierney won five PSAL titles and was named Coach of the Year by the PSAL four times.  The North East Region Coach of the Year in 2001 would ultimately spend 25 years at Tottenville teaching Physical Education and Health from 2000-2025.  His retirement from teaching then opened the door for him to join his longtime best friend at the College of Staten Island, re-uniting the former teammates on the same coaching staff for the third time.

The College of Staten Island Baseball Team will begin their season in mid-February of 2026.  They are coming off their first-ever Division II playoff appearance last year and will introduce a completely renovated all-turf CSI Baseball Complex in 2026.  For more on the Baseball program, visit the team landing page here throughout the offseason.
