JACKSON, NJ – The College of Staten Island baseball team traveled to Jackson, NJ on Tuesday afternoon for a 7-inning non-conference doubleheader against Georgian Court University at the Jackson Justice Complex.
The Dolphins surged throughout both contests to sweep the Lions 10-7 and 16-3 respectively to improve to 9-17 overall on the season.
Game One: CSI 10, GCU 7
The Dolphins took game one, 10-7, powered by a seven-run fifth inning. Vincent Weigele got CSI on the board early, singling to left-center to score Ryan Ortega for a 1-0 lead. Georgian Court responded in the bottom of the third with three runs to take a 3-1 advantage, then added two more in the fourth to extend the lead to 5-1.
After being held scoreless through the first two innings, the Dolphins erupted in the top of the fifth. Weigele led off with a single, sparking the rally. The Lions struggled to find the strike zone, issuing five walks and hitting two batters during the inning. Jamel Vera drove in CSI's second run with an RBI single, followed by a sacrifice fly from Michael Flashner to cut the deficit to 5-3.
Later in the inning, Jack Kehoe delivered an RBI double and Jaden Waterman added a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 5-5 with two outs. Continued control issues from Georgian Court allowed the Dolphins to plate three more runs on walks, taking an 8-5 lead before the inning ended.
CSI added two insurance runs in the seventh to secure the 10-7 victory.
Vera led the offense with three RBIs while going 2-4 at the plate. Flashner and Weigele each drove in two runs, with Weigele finishing a perfect 2-2 with a walk. Kehoe also contributed, going 2-4 with an RBI. On the mound, Anthony Salmonese earned his first win of the season, tossing one inning and striking out one batter.
Game Two: CSI 16, GCU 3
Game two saw another explosive offensive performance from the Dolphins, who completed the non-conference sweep with a 16-3 victory.
The tone was set early in the first inning behind a standout showing from three newcomers. Patrick Hassel opened the scoring with a three-run home run, the first of his collegiate career, to give CSI a quick 3-0 lead. Daniel McLaughlin and Brandon Bartick followed with RBI doubles, extending the advantage to 6-0, with McLaughlin driving in two and Bartick adding one.
By the end of the third inning, the Dolphins had built a 9-1 lead and continued to apply pressure throughout the seven-inning contest. CSI scored in every inning except the fifth, including three runs in both the sixth and seventh frames to cap off the 16-3 win.
Hassel finished with four RBI while going 1-for-3 at the plate. Bartick, McLaughlin, and Christopher Reilly each drove in three runs, with Bartick turning in a perfect 3-3 performance.
The College of Staten Island baseball team (9-17) returns to East Coast Conference action on Friday, opening a four-game series against D'Youville University in Buffalo, New York. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
