STATEN ISLAND, NY – The College of Staten Island men's and women's indoor track and field teams competed at the East Coast Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship on Sunday, Feb. 15, at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
Competing against 10 teams on the women's side and nine on the men's side, the Dolphins saw strong performances across the board. The women finished in a tie for eighth place with Queens, while the men secured a sixth-place finish. On top of the overall finishes for the team, the Dolphins saw two new school records set for the men's program while both sides featured personal best performances throughout the Championship event.
The first record came from Steven Elcock when he captured the Dolphins' lone individual gold medal of the meet, winning the 400m dash in 48.93. KJ Ede followed closely behind, placing second with a time of 49.27 and clocking in for a personal best time. Sam Whelan added to the medal count with a silver-medal finish in the 200-meter dash (21.90) and also placed third in the 60-meter dash (6.98), both personal bests for the senior.
Jeremiah Downer brought home the second school record for the Dolphins when he recorded a Long Jump distance of 6.42m. He finished the event in 11th place.
The Dolphins closed out the championship with another gold medal in the 4x400-meter relay. Entering the meet ranked first in the conference, the quartet of Elcock, Nicholas Runfola, Ibrahima Diallo, and Karran Riley delivered with a winning time of 3:23.89.
On the women's side, Adonijah Washington led the way with a fourth-place finish in the triple jump (11.34 meters) and a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter dash (1:00.07). The Distance Medley Relay team of Angelina Guerriero, Jacqueline Washington, Mahawa Kouyate, and Anna Carafiol placed fifth overall with a time of 14:08.61.
