FLUSHING, NY – The College of Staten Island baseball team hosted an East Coast Conference (ECC) doubleheader against D'Youville University on Saturday afternoon, earning a split with the Saints.
CSI dropped game one, 24-12, after surrendering a 10-0 lead, but rebounded with a 13-4 victory in the nightcap.
Game One: DYU 24, CSI 12
The Dolphins came out swinging, jumping to an early 3-0 lead behind contributions from Jason Romance and Jack Kehoe. CSI extended its advantage to 10-0 by the end of the third inning with a dominant offensive showing.
Michael Flashner sparked the rally with a double to right field, and both he and Romance later scored on RBI at-bats from Jaden Waterman and Vincent Weigele to make it 6-0. With one out, the Dolphins loaded the bases, and Jamel Vera delivered the big blow with a grand slam to push the lead to 10-0.
D'Youville responded in a big way, plating six runs in the fourth inning and another six in the sixth to take a 15-11 lead. CSI added a run in the bottom of the sixth, but the Saints continued their offensive surge with six more runs in the seventh and eight in the eighth to secure the 24-12 win.
Vera led the Dolphins with four RBI, while Romance, Waterman, and Weigele each went 2-4 with two RBI.
Game Two: CSI 13, DYU 4
The Saints struck first in game two with a run in the opening inning, but the Dolphins quickly answered with a six-run frame to take control.
Romance highlighted the inning with a two-run home run to give CSI a 2-1 lead. Ryan Ortega and Jandel Brito followed with back-to-back doubles to extend the lead to 5-1, and Brandon Bartick added an RBI single to make it 6-1.
CSI continued to build its lead, holding a 9-1 advantage before Vincent Weigele launched his second home run of the day in the fourth inning to make it 11-1. D'Youville added two more runs, including a home run, but could not keep pace as the Dolphins closed out the 13-4 victory.
Weigele finished 2-3 with a home run and two RBI, while Kehoe went 3-4 with two runs scored. Romance, Ortega, and Brito each drove in two runs.
Ryan Palm earned his first collegiate win on the mound, tossing a complete game with six strikeouts.
The Dolphins (5-10, 2-5 ECC) return to action next week when they host St. Thomas Aquinas College at 3:30 p.m.
