DOBBS FERRY, NY – The College of Staten Island baseball team opened their first East Coast Conference doubleheader series against Mercy University Friday afternoon in Dobbs Ferry, NY.
The Dolphins fell to the Mavericks twice in the afternoon, 8-1 and 5-2 respectively to drop to 7-15 overall and 4-10 in conference play.
Game One: Mercy 8, CSI 1
The Dolphins were held off the scoreboard until the eighth inning as the Mavericks took game one, 8-1.
Jamel Vera worked a walk in the top of the first to become CSI's first baserunner, but the Dolphins were unable to capitalize and struggled to convert opportunities throughout the game, stranding runners in multiple innings.
CSI finally broke through in the top of the eighth. Vera led off with a single down the left field line, stole second, and advanced to third on a Mercy throwing error. Michael Flashner followed with an RBI single to center field, bringing Vera home for the Dolphins' lone run.
Vera, Jaden Waterman, and Jason Romance each finished 1-for-3 at the plate, while Daniel McLaughlin recorded his first hit as a Dolphin with a ninth-inning double. On the mound, Michael Furst tossed 4.2 innings with two strikeouts, and Alex Martinez added 3.1 innings of relief, striking out four.
Game Two: Mercy 5, CSI 2
Mercy carried its momentum into game two, but the Dolphins briefly took control before falling, 5-2.
After the Mavericks opened the scoring, CSI answered in the top of the third. Flashner led off with a single, and Romance followed by driving the first pitch he saw over the wall for his fifth home run of the season, giving the Dolphins a 2-1 lead.
The advantage was short-lived, as Mercy responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to reclaim the lead, 4-2, and added an insurance run in the sixth.
Romance finished 1-for-3 with two RBI, while Jack Kehoe went 2-for-3 and Vera added a 2-for-4 performance. Nicholas Chiaia went the distance on the mound, pitching a complete six innings and striking out six.
