STATEN ISLAND, NY – The College of Staten Island women's soccer team opened its 2026 campaign at home against Dominican University (NY) on Monday afternoon. Following a tightly contested first half, the Dolphins and Chargers entered halftime scoreless with 45 minutes remaining. However, Dominican found the back of the net in the second half to hand the Dolphins a 1-0 loss in their season opener.
The Chargers came out strong, recording two shots within the opening six minutes of play. Addison Lucy then registered the first shot of her collegiate career, the first of the season for the Dolphins, but her attempt was stopped by the Dominican goalkeeper. The Chargers controlled the offensive tempo throughout the opening half, outshooting CSI 10-3. Lucy recorded two shots in the frame, while Isabella Schlee added one of her own.
With the match still scoreless at halftime, Caitlyn Thompson helped ignite the Dolphins' second-half attack with two shots, including one on goal. CSI outshot Dominican 8-7 in the second half, but the Chargers ultimately broke through for the game's lone goal. After gaining possession near midfield, Dominican advanced the ball into the attacking third and found the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead.
The Dolphins continued to battle in the closing minutes, as Schlee recorded two additional shots and Mazzy Cirinelli added another in an effort to find the equalizer, but CSI was unable to break through.
Schlee led the Dolphins offensively with three shots, while Lucy, Thompson, and Sienna Patella each recorded two. Oksana Zahirna made six saves in her first appearance in goal this season.
The College of Staten Island women's soccer team will return to action on Wednesday, September 9, when they host Felician University at 2:30 PM at Dolphins Soccer Park.
