Pavel Buyanov has been named the College of Staten Island’s Athlete of the Month for March 2008. The Russian born Buyanov is a 6-2 freshman on the Men;s Swim Team. He traveled to Oxford, OH to participate in the NCAA III National Championship and came home with 2 gold medals.
 
Alongside teammate Nikolay Shevchenko and Coach Oleg Soloviev, Buyanov hit the road to Oxford, Ohio in mid March in the hopes to fulfill a dream. He had worked hard throughout the swim season and was taking advantage of the training he’d been given. His hard work showed when he came home with a gold in both the 100-yard and 200-yard Breaststroke events.
 
Not only did he bring home 2 golds but he left his mark in the books, breaking a 1999 NCAA record in the 100-yard piece. The previous record of 54.69 was broken by Buyanov who chimed in at a time of 54.49.
 
Buyanov has had an incredible first year, breaking 8 CSI records, capturing 3 gold medals at the CUNYAC Championship and 2 a piece at the Metro Championships and ECAC Championships while also being named the ECAC Championship’s Performer of the Meet. If this is any inclination of what his future career will be like than Buyanov has a lot to look forward to.
