DOLPHINS WOMEN POWER TO BIG WIN OVER YORK

Melanie Johnson's 12 points helped pace CSI over York
Box Score The College of Staten Island women's basketball squad broke open an early first-half stalemate, to score a one-sided, 76-48, win over York College as part of CUNYAC play in Jamaica, New York, this evening.  The Dolphins improved to 10-8 overall and 7-2 in the CUNYAC, while the Cardinals fell to 1-16, 1-8, respectively.

The Dolphins took a modest, 6-2, lead early, and in what would be a recurring theme, the Cardinals bounced back, eventually keeping pace with CSI through the first 10+ minutes.  Both teams held the lead on a trio of occasions before a Melanie Johnson jumper gave the visiting Dolphins an 18-17 lead at exactly 8:48, a lead they would never relinquish.  Johnson's jumper started a 15-1 run that saw CSI take a 31-18 lead at 2:48, a run spearheaded by another Johnson three and two baskets from Megan Myhre.

CSI ended the half on an 8-2 run as well, taking a 39-24 lead into the lockers.  The team didn't miss a beat in the second frame, either, posting an 11-4 run to open the frame aided by a pair of Lisa Galasso and Olivia Tierno jumpers.

From there, York was never able to get to within inside of 20 points, as CSI countered York's attacks well with their high-tempo play.

CSI shot a crisp 46.2% from the field, while the Cardinals suffered through a 32.1% effort and shot just 42.3% from the free-throw line (11-26).  CSI also forced 35 York turnovers.  The Dolphins were led by Tierno's 18 points and six rebounds, while Johnson posted 12 markers and four assists.  York was led by Ishonda McFarland's 12 points.  York out-rebounded the Dolphins by a whopping 50-29 count.

CSI will be back in action on Friday evening, when they travel to face Brooklyn College at 5:30pm.
