CSI MEN SNEAK BY BEAVERS, 61-58

Box Score The College of Staten Island survived a cold shooting night to get by visiting City College of New York by a 61-58 count in a CUNYAC affair played this evening at the Sports & Recreation Center. The Dolphins led by as many as 10 points in the game, then fell behind late before rallying in the end. The win lifted CSI to 15-4 overall and 10-1 in the conference, while the Beavers fell to 7-13, 3-9, respectively.

CSI played the game without starting point guard Jonathan Chadwick-Myers, who averages over 18 points per game, but did see the return of sophomore Javon Cox, who had missed the previous three games. Still, the Dolphins started the game ice-cold, shooting just a hair over 20% over the game's first 9+ minutes, as the Beavers raced out to a 12-3 lead. CCNY's Zachary Heiss buried a pair of long-range shots while Jordan Ortega also chimed in with a pair of buckets.

CSI crawled back into the game with a 7-0 run, capped by a Matt Van Manen lay-up at 10:11, and after a Nathan Lopez bucket put CCNY up, 16-12, CSI used a numbing 17-3 run over the final seven minutes of the frame to go into the locker room with a 29-19 lead. Bloochy Magloire was the catalyst, burying a pair of three's to give CSI the nice cushion. Still, the Dolphins shot just 35% in the frame (11-31), and the lead hardly seemed secure.

After trading baskets to start the second half, CCNY made its move. The Beavers cut the lead to three on four occasions, but each time CSI responded to go back up by two possessions. Finally, with 8:09 to go and CSI up 47-43, Ortega buried a jumper and then two freebies by Heiss knotted the score. After CSI scored a basket on a Herschel Jenkins open lay-up, a three-point play by CCNY's Terence Johnston gave the Beavers their first lead since the early stages, 50-49, with 6:15 to go.

An Ortega lay-up gave CCNY a 52-50 lead with 5:28 to go, but it would prove to be the Beavers' last lead. A Magloire lay-up tied the game a minute later, and after a CCNY miss, Cox nailed a short jumper to give CSI the lead at 4:09, 54-52. The teams traded baskets and then combined to miss their next five shots, and CCNY also missed three-straight free-throws as the Dolphins took a 59-55 lead with just 23 seconds left. Not ready to go down without a fight, Johnston canned a three-pointer to make it a one-point game with 15 ticks left, but after a foul, Magloire hit two free-throws to give the three-point edge. Down to one last attempt, Paul Dail's shot at the buzzer was blocked by CSI's Kevin King, preserving the win for the home team.

CSI rallied to shoot 36.8% in the game (21-57), and they held a 42-37 rebound edge. For the second time this season, the Dolphins blocked a total of 12 shots in a game, the second-highest single game mark in CSI history. Magloire led the show with 22 points and five rebounds. Van Manen notched 13 points, eight rebounds and three blocks, while King and Cox added 10 points each. Jenkins scored eight assists. For CCNY, Heiss and Ortega each tallied 16 points.

CSI is back in action on Friday night when they travel to face Baruch College at 7:30pm.
