Box Score The College of Staten Island women's basketball team won for the third straight time, using a late surge to catapult over Emerson College, 68-66, at Emerson's campus in Boston, Massachusetts, this afternoon. The win lifted the Dolphins to 3-1 overall while the Lions fell to 3-1.
Although the game was close the entire way, CSI had the better of it in the first half, never trailing after falling behind, 2-0, inside the first minute. The Dolphins used a 10-2 run, highlighted by three straight
Melanie Johnson baskets to open up a 10-4 lead, and a few moments later, CSI's
Megan Myhre canned a three to make in 15-7 with 12:47 to go.
After the Lions whittled the lead down, CSI went on its biggest tear of the half, going on an 11-4 run over four minutes to take their biggest lead, 38-26, with under a minute to go in the stanza, with Myhre adding another three in the run. However, the Lions went into the lockers on a 6-0 run inside of a minute to go, getting some much needed momentum before the break, aided by a pair of Janissa Delzo drives. At half, CSI held a more modest, 38-32, lead.
The Emerson jolt to end the first frame carried over to the second half. After closing to within a basket after a Kristin Brice jumper and a pair of Catherine Cloutier freebies, the Lions then finished up a 14-8 run over the stanza's first seven minutes to grab their first lead since the opening minute, 48-46. CSI would promptly tie, but an Emily Cameron and Elizabeth Horan three pointer then gave Emerson a 54-48 lead, and from there, CSI really needed a lift.
That lift came from another Myhre three, and CSI followed by charity stripe points and then a lay-in by
Katelyn Hepworth to gain back the lead, 56-55, with just 5:15 to go.
CSI never trailed the rest of the way, but the game was certainly up in the air. Down 66-62, Emerson responded with a Brice lay-up at 2:00, and after a Dolphin miss the other way, Brice scored a huge offensive rebound and put-back with 1:14 to go to tie the score at 66-66. CSI missed a shot the other way, and Emerson had its chance, but a Horan jumper missed the mark. With inside of 50 ticks remaining, CSI's
Lisa Galasso missed a running drive, bit with 25 seconds to go, CSI forced a Lions turnover, and Johnson raced in to score a lay-up with 22 seconds left to give CSI the lead, 68-66.
Down to one final shot, Emerson was able to get the ball to Kelsey Johnson, but the home player missed the contested jumper with five seconds left and rattled out of bounds with time expired, clinching the CSI win.
CSI newcomer Alyssa Carlson enjoyed her finest day as a Dolphin, posting a team best 19 points to go with 13 rebounds. Galasso finished with 15, while Johnson tallied 12 and Myhre 11. Brice led all Emerson scorers with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Delzo posted 14 points and Cloutier with 12. CSI out-rebounded Emerson, 45-40, but fell victim at the free-throw line, shooting a chilly 10-for-22 (45.5%).
The Dolphins will be back in action on Tuesday, November 26, when it opens up conference play against York College on the road at 6pm.
