Bronxville, NY | The College of Staten Island women's tennis team successfully ended their five-match slide today, powering over Sarah Lawrence College at the Andrew Tennis Courts in Bronxville today as part of non-conference play. The match was a make-up from yesterday's postponed match due to rain. CSI lifted to 2-5 overall while SLC fell to 1-10.
Depite the final score, doubles was very close from start to finish. In the No. 1 spot, the team of
Tristiana Adragna and
Katherine Villarroel were crisp in an 8-5 win, getting the best of Alexis Nanavaty and Stephie Shen. The other two doubles flights had to be decided by extra points.
In the No. 2 frame, the team of
Lorianna Fernandez and
Iris Cule teamed up for the first time, and they were deadlocked with the Gryphons' Rebecca Mannillo and Sarah Ashdown. Play finally had to go to a tie-breaker as the two sides were even at 8-8. In that tie-breaker, the CSI team was up for the challenge, and won 4-0 to take the flight.
No. 3 was just as tough as
Mariah DeGuia and
Dilnoza Pulatova teamed up to face SLC's Ines Fernandez and Raven Vance. Play was locked at 7-7, but the Dolphins were able to take the next set. With a chance to put the flight away, CSi was able, and scored a victory point by taking a 9-7 winner, giving CSI a hard-fought clean sweep of doubles.
In singles, the teams decided to play a single pro set to determine flight winners. Again, CSI was able to sweep things for the first time this season. Adragna was able to best Nanavaty at No. 1, 8-3, while Villarroel needed extra points to beat Shen, 9-8 (4-0). DeGuia passed Mannillo at No. 3, in another tight one, 8-6, while Fernandez took an 8-3 win at No. 4. Cule scored her first collegiate singles win over Phoebe Hurd at No. 5, 8-0, while Dilnoza defeated Jillian Price at No. 6, 8-5.
CSi now has two games left in their 2018 season. They will first travel to Kean University for a non-conference test at 5pm, before finishing up on Thursday, October 18, at home against York College in their final CUNYAC game.
