DOLPHINS BLOW PAST BLOODHOUNDS, 83-58

Story Links

Staten Island, NY | CSI junior Diana Todaro poured in 18 points, her second highest point total of the season, as the College of Staten Island women's basketball team cruised past John Jay College, 83-58. Staten Island used a 25-point opening quarter to take the lead and never looked back as CSI improved to 5-2, 2-0, while John Jay dropped to 4-3, 1-1.

The Dolphins won their second game in a row by holding the Bloodhounds to just 27.7% (18-65) from the floor. Staten Island stayed true to their game plan and converted 45.7% (32-70) from the floor with 48 of their 83 points coming from within the paint. The Bloodhounds strolled into The Tank on a four-game win streak, a streak in which they averaged 71 points.

Scoring was at a premium to open the game as both squads struggled to find the bottom of the net in the opening two minutes.  The Dolphins would make some adjustments which allowed them to jump out to an 8-2 lead. Jacquelyn Cali played a crucial part, sinking a 3-point basket followed by a layup.  John Jay answered back with a layup by Katie Healy to cut the lead down to four which was the closest the Bloodhounds were able to make it. The Dolphins kept their foot on the gas and jumped out to a 13-point lead after Nicole Imbesi converted a pair of shots.

John Jay continued to put up a fight and cut the lead down to seven early in the second quarter when Jessica Gorman found room in the paint to lay one off of the glass. As the quarter wore on, the Dolphins continued to see their lead increase as they vaulted out to a 47-26 lead via a 14-4 run. Cali had one of her better shooting nights of the season, scoring a season-high 13 points while also grabbing a season-high seven rebounds.

Megan McEwan struggled from the floor tonight, going 1-for-8 from the field, but her team was there to pick her up as four Dolphins tallied double-digit points in the win. Todaro felt comfortable inside the paint all night which allowed her to convert 53% of her attempts.

The third quarter saw the Dolphins jump out to their largest lead of the game, 34 points, as the Staten Island offense started firing on all cylinders. Rosa Perone was effective, shooting 60% from the floor and scoring a season-high 12 points before fouling out. Brianna Robisky and Devin Mooney got in on the action in the third by adding to the score.

With the game well in hand, the Dolphins were able to relieve their starters which gave way to Elena Demontreux collecting her first points of the year. Demontreux put the Dolphins up 27, 72-45, when she drained her 3-point attempt from the left side. Also picking up her first points of the season was Lina Bitar

Staten Island looked dominant in their fifth win of the season and extended their win streak to 14 over the Bloodhounds.

The Dolphins will now look ahead towards Medgar Evers College on Friday for yet another CUNYAC showdown at 6:00 pm in Brooklyn, NY.
