Brooklyn , NY | The College of Staten Island Women's Soccer Team traveled to Brooklyn College, the site of last year's CUNYAC Championship win, for a meeting with the Bulldogs earlier today. Despite a massive shot disparity between the two sides, the Dolphins were unable to translate their opportunities into goals for the first 57 minutes. However, the game's lone goal by
Jordan Yagos was enough to get the Dolphins level at 6-6 on the season and drop Brooklyn to 4-9-1.
From the opening whistle, the Dolphins dominated possession and all but one fo the game's 27 attempted shots belonged to them. Through the end of the first half, the Dolphins had attempted nine shots, three of them on goal, while Brooklyn had failed to tally a single attempt at goal. CSI also had all five of the first half corner kicks and a physical 45 minutes between the two sides resulted in eleven foul calls, five against the Dolphins and six against the Bulldogs.
Despite their distinct advantage on the stat sheet, the Dolphins entered the second half locked in a scoreless tie as they looked to maintain their perfect record against their former conference. During the first twelve minutes of the second half, CSI had already attempted five shots, Brooklyn still looking for their first of the game at this point. However, none of the Dolphins' second-half shot attempts were on frame, a recurring theme throughout the game. This changed come the 58' when Yagos finally put one into the back of the cage off of a feed from
Mirsade Pelinkovic. The shot from the left of the box by Yagos traveled to the right of goalkeeper Carmen Proffitt and in to put the Dolphins ahead 1-0.
Following the CSI goal, Proffitt went on to save four Dolphins shot attempts in the next fifteen minutes. However, her team did not attempt their first shot of the game until the 88' at which point the Dolphins were in possession of a 26-0 shot advantage. That shot in the closing minutes by Anna Curran which traveled wide was the last of the game for either side and the Dolphins were able to get by Brooklyn with a single goal, 1-0.
The goal for Yagos, ultimately the game-winner, was her fourth of the season. For Pelinkovic, the assist on the score was her team-leading fifth. The 26-1 shot tally in favor of the Dolphins gives them a +65 in that category for the season as they level their record back at .500 with the 1-0 win. Also, they are now 5-0 against the CUNYAC this year after today's victory.
While the men have a road meeting with John Jay on Wednesday, the women will be hosting the Bloodhounds at the CSI Soccer Complex that same day at 3:30 PM.
