AFTER 110 MINUTES, CSI & JOHN JAY BATTLE TO A 1-1 DRAW

Story Links

Staten Island, NY | In a game that saw both teams earn quality chances throughout, the College of Staten Island and John Jay College managed to push just goal through apiece, earning a 1-1, double-overtime draw at the CSI Soccer Complex.  The result, which caps CSI's competition against the CUNY Athletic Conference, finalized their unbeaten streak, playoffs included, to 25 (23-0-2) over the conference since late in the 2016 season.

In a statistical dead-heat after the opening 45 minutes, both teams had their share of chances.  Frustrated by the offsides call, CSI very nearly registered in the 11th minutes, when a great individual play by Lizbeth Aparicio led to a quality cross that Nermina Bracic posted wide of the frame, and later Jordan Yagos and Amber Mitchell both missed high with quality opportunities near the top of the box.  JJC was equally unlucky, as Medina Mulic and Alexandra Dadario were both stopped by Samantha Beaudreault and the Bloodhounds had another golden chance on a threading ball that was swpet ahead via the head defensively by CSI's Nicole Mignone.

After 6-6 tie in shots after the first stanza, John Jay started to separate from CSI in the second half, dominating early possession and stringing together passes and runs, consistently attacking the CSI defensive end.  The Bloodhounds got a lot of quality looks via the corner, getting six attempts in the first 10 minutes of the frame.  The final one, taken by Mulic, rattled around the goal mouth and a shot attempt was cleared by Rebecca D'Aloia, but the ball was batted with the arm, awarding JJC with a penalty kick.

Kaitie Healy did the honors, and despite a quiet game by the Bloodhounds leading scorer, she calmly sank the ball into the low corner to beat Beaudreault to give the visitors a 1-0 lead at 55:34.

Now needing to press, CSI strung together the offense, and almost immediately after the goal, Amber Mitchell was able to earn space and sent one just wide past JJC keeper Erika Estro, nearly tying it.  As time continued to narrow, Beaudreault would make another pair of quality stops to keep it a one-goal game.  The Dolphins would finally use a set piece to get even.  From nearly 45 yards away, Gabrielle Chirco stepped into a free kick that she sent on a line-drive into the box that Aparicio extended with the head and on a hop past Estro to knot the game at 1-1 with just 16:04 to play.

The final 15 minutes were a highlight reel for Beaudreault as the CSI keeper flat-out robbed JJC on a series of golden chances from in close, including two against Jillian Golden and another by Mulic with just 1:13 to play.

Overtime proved rather uneventful, as both teams were taut defensively and very stingy with shot windows.  Both teams would get off two shots in the final 20 minutes, with only Nicole Mignone putting on on target, forcing Estro to make the save with just 3:41 to play.

JJC led the final shot count, 17-13 (9-6 on goal), and JJC had a 9-2 edge in corners.  Beaudreault made eight saves in the tie, while Estro parried five.  Three players were given yellow cards, with JJC's Estro and Dadario booked and CSI's Mirsade Pelinkovic got tagged as well.

Up next for CSI will be their season finale on Saturday, when they host New York University at the CSI Soccer Complex at 12 Noon.  The Dolphins will also honor their six seniors in the game prior to kickoff.
