Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

FDU USES OVERTIME TO GET PAST CSI, 2-1

Madison, NJ | The College of Staten Island women's soccer team got a late goal in regulation to send their tilt against FDU - Florham into overtime, but in the end the Devils proved too strong, scoring just over five minutes into the extra frame to secure a 2-1, overtime win.  The Dolphins fell to 3-5 overall, while FDU lifted their mark to 9-1-1, improving to 5-0 at home.

Despite the home team controlling possession for long stretches, neither side could get on the register until late in the first half.  The Dolphins did a fine job of defending in the final third of the field, keeping FDU out of the shot column until the game's 20th minute, when Samantha Beaudreault was able to parry a Erika Pita shot on frame.  Eight minutes later FDU forced another big CSI save on a Madeline Finnegan shot, but with the pressure increasing, Jenna Conanan was able to connect on a rocket from 20 yards out that beat Beaudreault to make it a 1-0 score at 30:27 of the first half.

Beaudreault would go on to make six more first-half saves, as CSI was unable to get into the shot column in the first stanza.  Still, after 45 minutes FDU only held on to a small, 1-0, advantage.

The halftime respite proved well for the Dolphins, and forced to go on the offensive a bit, CSI was able to get better possession.  Still, getting a shot on frame proved hard to come by, and it wasn't until the 75th minute where Ashley Paulino was able to make a save on a Gabrielle Chirco shot.  That seemed to pick the Dolphins up as once again they came crashing down the field on top of the FDU defense, and with just 11:01 left, a Nicole Mignone long-range shot was tipped in by freshman Jordan Yagos, tying the game at 1-1.  To that point, CSI had been heavily out-shot, 20-2, but the Dolphins were right back into the game.

Trying to end the game before the extra period, FDU certainly pressed in the final 10, but several shots went wide and Beaudreault continued to stay busy, finishing with 9 total saves in regulation.

Overtime, however, belonged to the Devils.  From the opening whistle the home team forced the issue.  Tatiana Nieto sent the first OT shot wide just 15 seconds into play, and later, Erica Martins put one into Beaudreault just 16 seconds later.  FDU picked their moments wisely and just 4:44 into the frame, Pita did the honors of ending the game when she converged on a long pass from Sydney Weber and bounced one in to walk her team off with the win, 2-1.

FDU would finish with a 27-2 edge in shots (13-2 on goal), and a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.  Both teams committed seven fouls and there were no bookings in the game.  For FDU, they improved their record over CSI to a perfect, 6-0, all-time, and it was their third 2-1 win in the series.

CSI will now look to bounce back on Saturday, when they face the City College of New York at Purchase College at 4pm.
