HOT-SHOOTING SNHU DOWNS CSI WOMEN, 91-50

Manchester, NH |  Southern New Hampshire University posted an incredibly strong shooting afternoon at the expense of the College of Staten Island Women's Basketball team this afternoon, dumping the Dolphins by a 91-50 count in the first all-time meeting between the two sides.  SNHU improved to 3-1 with the win, while CSI fell to a season-opening 0-3.

The Dolphins grabbed the first lead of the game on a made jumper by sophomore Kayla Schmitter, but the Penmen went up the floor and Gyanna Russell canned a jumper of her own, setting the tone for a strong shooting game for the home side.  Another lay-up by Russell followed by a three by Karlee Ziliak gave SNHU a quick, 7-5, advantage, and they did not look back from there, scoring the next six points to take a 13-5 lead early.

On three separate occasions, CSI cut the lead to six in the opening stanza, the last on a Jada Rogers jumper to make it 19-13 with just 84 seconds left in the quarter, but back-to-back three's by Molly Terry and Maddie Murphy gave the home side a 27-16 advantage at the first break.

CSI would go silent in the second frame, misfiring on their first five shots while committing six turnovers in the first five minutes of the second, and SNHU used it to pull off an 11-0 run, ballooning the lead to 38-16, powered by a couple of Adriana Timberlake buckets.  CSI would finish with just eight points in the frame, and by halftime, SNHU had built a comfortable 45-24 lead.

Another tough start in the third for the Dolphins, saw SNHU post a 12-0 run to start the first six minutes of the second half.  Three's by Megan McEwan and Kristen Arvelo did their best to cut into the lead, but Ziliak and Samantha Chapps responded with baskets to give SNHU a more sizable, 70-37, edge after three periods.

The Penmen would close the fourth quarter on another run, this time 8-2, to make the final margin of win 41 points, cruising to a 91-50 finish on an afternoon where the home team would shoot 57.4% from the field (39-68), next to just 29% for Staten Island (18-62).  SNHU boasted a 43-29 edge in rebounds, and the Penmen forced 21 CSI turnovers to finish +4 in that department.

Both Timberlake and Russell finished with a team-best 14 points, while Murphy finished with 12 points, followed by Murphy's 11.  Jada Rogers paced CSI with 12 points, followed by Arvelo's 11.

CSI will now be idle until this coming weekend, when they face Post University at 1 pm at The Tank on Staten Island.
