Pleasantville, NY | The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball team faced their final Division II opponent of the season today and were handed a 40-point loss by Pace University in a 94-54 defeat. The Setters shot over 51% from the field to improve to 10-2 with the win while holding the 3-6 Dolphins to only 33% from the floor and forcing 22 CSI turnovers.
Both teams came out of the gate slowly, each scoring only five points through the first 4:44 of the game, before CSI finally broke the 5-5 tie on an
Adeola Latunji free-throw. The 6-5 Dolphins lead would be their only lead of the game as the Setters outscored CSI 22-7 over the next seven minutes to go in front 27-13. It was at that point that Latunji broke what was a 7-0 Pace run with a layup before an
Andrew Kartalis make brought CSI back within ten less than a minute later.
Krystian Kopec cut the deficit back down to single digits with a free-throw, but this was as close as the Dolphins would get the remainder of the way.
Leading 34-22 with 3:22 to play in the first half, the Setters went on an 8-0 that was snapped with only two seconds remaining on the clock to send the Dolphins into halftime down 42-24. Latunji was the only Dolphin to record more than a single made field goal in half number one as he registered eight points on 3-7 from the field. Tyrone Cohen Jr. had 14 to lead Pace at the break and Bryan Powell had 12 to go along with a team-leading five rebounds.
The two teams exchanged baskets early in the second half with the Dolphins getting as close as fourteen at the 16:21 mark. However, another Setters run, this time an 11-0 spurt in less than two minutes, put the Dolphins down 25, a deficit they never recovered from. The Dolphins wouldn't get any closer than 22 points again as the Setters had runs of 8-0 and 10-0 at different points during the final eight minutes of the game, ultimately winning by a 40-point margin, 94-54.
Latunji was the only CSI player in double-figures with 12 and was also the only Dolphins player to register more than two made shots. The Setters had two players score 20 or more, Powell and Cohen Jr., and three more, Brandon Jacobs, Martin Mann, and Austin Gilbertson tally double-digits. Pace shot over 51% in the game and only committed nine turnovers as the Dolphins were harassed by the Setters' defense to the tune of 22 giveaways of their own. CSI's 32.6% shooting simply wasn't enough to keep them close in what went down as their second-straight loss.
The Dolphins will be back in action thirteen days from now as they will host the annual Tournament of Heroes at The Tank with their first matchup coming against Curry College on Friday, December 27
th. Tip-off in what will be the second game of the night on day one of the tournament is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
