It was tough going for the College of Staten Island Women's Tennis team, as they were downed this afternoon by Kean University by an 8-1 count at the CSI Tennis Center in a make-up of a previously rained-out contest. With the loss, CSI fell to a season-opening 0-3 this season while Kean lifted to over .500, now with a 3-2 overall record.
Play started with Doubles and Kean was up to the task. In the No. 3 spot, the Cougars duo of Samantha Luu and Nicole Nin were efficient in an 8-0 win over CSI's
Iris Cule and Alexis Ketridge, who made her official CSI debut. One spot up, Kean's team of Jan Bayanin and Wilmeris Matias were next off of the court when they scored an 8-3 winner over
Mariah DeGuia and
Lorianna Fernandez.
In what was certainly the most heavily-contested match of the afternoon, CSI's top team of
Tristiana Adragna and
Hannah Bruschi were locked in a battle with KU's Anna Chan and Jada Mack. After back-and-forth play, the teams went into a tiebreaker at 8-8. There, it was Chan and Mack that managed to slip by, scoring a 7-5 win there to win the set, 9-8, and to give Kean an overall lead of 3-0.
That would give way to Singles and there, the six Kean players all scored wins in their respective flights. Chan took the win in the top spot over Bruschi, 6-2, 6-1. Samantha Luu won in the number three spot while Mack won at No. 4 over DeGuia, 6-2, 6-2.
CSI was able to break up the shutout when Adragna, playing in the No. 2 spot was able to get by Bayanin. Adragna won the opening set, 6-2, and then was up 4-2 in the second set before Bayanin retired, giving Adragna the win.
CSI will now have to look to get into the win column on Saturday when they face off against Farmingdale State on Saturday for a 12 Noon showdown with the Rams at the CSI Tennis Center.
