Staten Island, NY | The College of Staten Island Women's Soccer team hosted their first NCAA Division II opponent, Concordia College, this afternoon and lost a high-scoring affair by a score of 4-3. The Clippers jumped out in front early on an own-goal scored by the Dolphins and quickly went ahead 2-0 on a second goal five minutes later. However, the Dolphins would battle back and cut the deficit to one on two separate occasions in the first half, the first goal making it 2-1 and another to make it 3-2. CSI would then tie the game at 3 early in the second half, but the fourth Clippers goal went down as the game-winner in a 4-3 Concordia victory. The Dolphins loss drops them to 1-3 while the win levels Concordia's record at 2-2.
The Clippers got off to a very strong start in the first half immediately earning a corner kick that ultimately led to the game's first goal. The corner sailed across the box towards the far post which is where the Dolphins headed the ball over goalkeeper
Samantha Beaudreault and into their own net. Ahead 1-0, the Clippers got back on the scoreboard five minutes later when Sara Calvert scored off of a costly Dolphins turnover just outside of the box. Calvert's shot connected top-shelf and left Beaudreault without any chance to keep it out putting the Dolphins in a 2-0 hole.
Behind 2-0, the Dolphins responded quickly when
Rebecca D'Aloia charged up the left sideline and by her marker before putting one past Sophia Cogan to cut the Clipper lead to one. However, Concordia would get back in front by two 15 minutes later when Leigh-Ann Ramsay worked her way out of a double-team to put another perfectly-placed shot into the upper left corner of the net and make it 3-1.
Once again it was the Dolphins coming up with an answer less than five minutes later, this time capitalizing off of a Clippers turnover.
Amber Mitchell came up with the takeaway and fired a shot that was initially saved by Cogan before rolling over her and across the goal line. This brought the Dolphins back to within a single score, 3-2, which is the score that would hold until halftime.
Come the start of the second half not much changed for either team as the Dolphins would finally get even less than four minutes into half number two. It was
Samantha LaValle's fourth goal of the season that knotted up the score at 3-3, but less than five minutes later the Clippers were back in front. This time it was Reagan Pechy netting her first goal of the season for Concordia to make it a 4-3 game.
From this point forward the Dolphins dominated possession and maintained constant pressure on both the Clippers defense and Cogan in goal. Despite constantly facing great CSI chances, Cogan was able to make several remarkable saves to keep her team in front. Every one of them proved necessary as the Clippers did not register a single shot following their go-ahead goal scored in the 54'. Unfortunately for CSI, their nine second-half shots, several of them from point-blank range, weren't enough to get even and they fell by a final score of 4-3.
In what was a thoroughly entertaining matchup of two Division II teams, the Dolphins held the advantage in both shots and corner kicks, 16-10 and 7-3. However, the Clippers never played from behind in the game while CSI was trying to battle back from behind for all but ten minutes. LaValle led the Dolphins with five shots and tallied her team-leading fourth goal with Mitchell and D'Aloia both adding their first of the season. Calvert and Ramsay each scored very impressive goals in the upper corner of the net for Concordia, but it was Pechy who delivered the game-winner, her first goal of 2019.
Up next for the Dolphins is a pair of games against CUNYAC opponents with a road game against Medgar Evers up first this Saturday at 6:30 PM followed by a meeting with the Cardinals of York College at the CSI Soccer Complex next Wednesday at 4:00 PM.
